James Cameron Working on Game/Movie IP

James Cameron is working on a brand new MMO. James Cameron is also working on a brand new movie. What do they have in common? It's all set in the same universe and set to launch close together. Gamecloud caught the scoop.

Quote:
This Businessweek.com article reports that mega movie director James Cameron (The Terminator, Aliens, True Lies and Titanic) plans to launch a sci-fi themed MMORPG called Project 880. The plan is to launch the game before a planned movie version. Little else was revealed about the game which is at least two years away, according to the article.
Cool. I like this cross media stuff when it's done right instead of cheap "make a quick buck" license games.

Bleh... I guarantee this will be a buggy peice of shit. There is just no way to co-ordinate the creation of a quality MMO with a quality movie. They take different amounts of time to create, and different skills. So, I expect both to be crap, though the movie has a much greater chance of being not-crap, and the MMO will likely flop and be sold to SoE.

From Ain't It Cool, there are two projects Cameron is working on.
One is "Battle Angel":
"Inspired by Japanese graphic novels, he is currently developing Battle Angel, a cyborg thriller set in the 26th century. "It's going to be a mega-budget film shot in 3-D," Cameron enthuses. "It's set in a post-human world in the distant future, and a number of the main characters will be computer-generated. The main thrust is a love story between a human man and a female cyborg, and the film contains a range of characters from the fully human to the fully machine."

The second is "Avatar":
"Josh ends up becoming part of a company program that mines resources from a distant planet called Pandora. On this planet are a race of 8ft tall, humanoid aliens called the Na'vi. The company has developed a process to "grow" Avatars, which are a combination of human and Na'vi DNA cells grown to full adult size. With these 8ft shells that look like the Na'vi and have enough human DNA in them, the human donor's mind can be linked into the body of the Avatar. This allows humans the ability to breath on the planet and communicate better with the aliens.
On the planet, Josh goes through training sessions where he learns to use his Avatar body.
Eventually, he and other "controller" (humans who are linked to Avatar), learn to move around and survive on the planet, which is covered mostly by a rainforest. These forests are filled with fantastic and deadly creatures like the Manticore which is this gigantic, black-coated panther like creature with six legs and a tail with a poisonous stinger on it.
Cameron creates all kinds of deadly creatures that infest the forests. Also, this planet's weird magnetic field causes a particular phenomenon. Many mountains and mountain ranges actually "float" above the planet. I can't remember enough to explain it now, but it's explained pretty well in the scriptment. Well, the company has a camp in the middle of this forest surrounded by guard towers and electric fences to kkeep these creatures out. they also have gunships and 14-ft armored hydraulic suits (reminds me a lot like the metal carrier suit used in Aliens) but with gatling guns and flamethrowers. This camp is ran by this dude who's only interested in raping the planet of its resources and making the company profit and doesn't really care about the damage mining causes on the eco-system of the planet and its aliens. Over a series of small adventures on Pandora, Josh meets this Na'vi woman who teaches him how to survive on the planet, and they become attracted to each other. Remember the Na'vi though alien, are very humanoid. Well soon conflict rises between the Na'vi, Josh, a few controllers and the company's military."

I go wherever Cameron goes.

As for the MMORPG, I say it's Avatar, as the movie's description sounds like a perfect franchise to develop such a game around.

I'm not beiing sarcastic, but has their ever been one done right except for Riddick maybe?

I'm really at a loss of any good movie/game...and Tie Fighter does not count.

Movies don't become dated as quickly as games. It could easily be that Cameron will finish the movie and just shelve it till the game's complete. It's not like he has to worry about running out of money.

I agree with Zeal that it's probably Avatar, but if they made one based off of Battle Angel I'd want to get in on that. Play as a jar head, oh yeah.

FYI, Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM) is the greatest comic series ever. Read it, by any means.

Ringworld?

A few years ago there was talk that Cameron would be working on Larry Niven's Ringworld ; God knows that would be ripe for an MMOG setting. Hell, you could give each player their own personal Alaska-sized territory and not run out of room.

The thing is there hasn't been that many of them period. It seems to be a new trend and it's a good one. They tried to do it with the Enter the Matrix game, which pretty much was suckage. But Riddick got it right. It's nice to see something add content to an IP instead of just mimmick it.

Gunn is PERFECT for a MMORPG. It has a large-ish world, clear cut factions, more than one "Arena" sub-game (gladiators and something-ball, very cool), endless item/character crafting/cutomization possibilities, some cool vehicles, awesome weapons, even more awesome hand-to-hand and melee combat... Few Mangás are such goo material for a MMORPG. I'm signing up for this one ASAP.

No good would come out of an anime-based MMORPG.

All you'd see is idiotic anime freaks hitting ^_^ every 2 seconds.
