MTV's Multiplayer bog has posted word that the previously hinted atMarvel Universe MMORPG will not be heading to store shelves until 2012.
Quote:
In the near future, after you’ve seen Marvel’s upcoming “Captain America” movie (in 2011) and “Avengers” movie (in 2012) — when all of that is out of the way — you should play Marvel’s massively multiplayer online game.
Expect that to happen in 2012, because that’s the sequence of events Marvel’s president of worldwide consumer products, Simon Philips, told my Splashpage Blog colleague Rick Marshall in a recent interview.
“It sounds like a long way away, but it’s not,” he said. “We’ve got to create, together with [game publisher] Gazillion, that environment that is going to be a totally immersive experience and a perpetual storytelling experience as well.” Philips said that he sees MMOs as “the next generation of storytelling.”
Three years-ish for the whole thing and they only seem to be in the discussion stages? I don't like the cut of Gazillion's jib, they don't sit right with me.
Most MMOs have like a 3 to 6 month public beta. That's them down to 2 and 1/2 years already.
Along with "a perpetual storytelling experience" and "a totally immersive experience"? Expect it to be delayed in late 2011, change engine in early 2012, change developer in 2013, and get put on indefinite hold by 2014.

Do we know much about Gazillion? They can deliever what Microsoft and Cryptic studios couldn't?
I think it is more of Microsoft and Cryptic wanted to do things their way which makes sense as they have years of game development knowledge. However Marvel wants it done their way which is why Cryptic is releasing Champions Online instead of Marvel Online.

Actually, I think MS killed all MMOs in development when the leadership of MGS changed hands (Mattrick). I'm pretty sure Cryptic was like 'uh... wtf, ok so we'll get our on IP and keep moving forward'.
