The news was short and sweet on X-Play just now, here are the bullet points, it sure sounds like they're trying to make E3 return to a state of yesteryear:
Back to the LA Convention Center.
Earlier in the year from June 2nd - June 4th.
While E3 will not be open to the public, they will be opening it to a 'wider variety' of attendees.
Excitement begins, now will the publishers return?
"Breaking news! - X-play has just revealed detials of E3 2008 with plans to bring back the convention's old format with larger displays and less restricted attendance. e3 '08 land june 2-4.
'bout time they realised the measures they took were too drastic. ..It wouldn't have been too difficult to keep E3 big and popular while tackling its more obvious failings. (said the amateur)
I doubt it'll even matter.
The publishers figured out that they don't need the expense of this type of show anymore.
EA and the crew get more mileage from less expense from a "Gamer's Day" type event.
Yeah, but it cost us (the press) more mileage. I understand having all those events collected within one was one of the reasons so many actually liked E3.
Personally, I hope it does back to the older style and continues to thrive. I always liked the rush of the event.
And what of the mythical booth babes? They need to bring them back too. The one rule I would have added is that they HAVE to show gameplay at these things. I think it was the year before last that all we saw was CGI trailers for games we already knew was coming out.
What they should really do is bring back the booth babes, and get rid of the gaming. That's what E3 needs these days, and I'd whole-heartedly support it. Maybe they could rename it Double-D3 or something? ..There are better things now (PAX etc) for the actual games.
