Well, crap. I was hoping this would be worth a purchase. Guess not. 70% is decent, but not nearly as high as I was expecting. But, to give Doom 3 above 90% and then cite a lot of the same problems I saw with it (lack of 21st century game design, plot goes nowhere, uninspired) I wonder what PC Gamer is playing at. I may still get it, but it's no longer a sure thing. Guess I'll plunk down the cash for FEAR instead.
I think they caught alot of flack with their Doom 3 score, so they figure this is pretty much the same as Doom 3, so they just whipped down a low score, even if it was better. Maybe i'm just crazy though, well they didn't like SOFII a whole lot either and i loved that game. They gave SOFII a 73% so i think i'll have some fun with it.

that was a fun game, and you know, i dont realyl care about story in fps games anymore. I just want mindless fun and if this game gives it to me, well damn thats just awesome then.

Umm... this really wasn't made to be submitted, my dear mods.
I don't submit stories without any hard-proof and there's no hard-proof (scans) yet.
Anyway here's another quote:
Quote:
So why is it that Quake 4, Raven's recent teaming iwth id, plays it very, very safe? A solid shooter, it's nonetheless a throwback to a time before Half-Life and Half-Life 2, Call of Duty, and Far Cry - an era in shooters when all you needed was a big gun and an even bigger boss monster to aim it at. And unlike other Recent "retro" shooters like Painkiller and Serioius Sam, Quake 4 doesnt offer inventive level designs, unique flair, or a budget price tag.
I hope that it isn't 100% legit. I wanted to love Quake 4
Yeah, you know, the typical... "I'm minding my own business, something bad happens, try to stay alive." thing. I think FPS should milk the revenge factor more, not enough revenge FPS out there.

Regarding the lack of multiplayer bots being a negative point, are we still playing on N64s on our own or something? As a PC game, it makes far more sense to just jump into an actual online server and play. Yeah, there's the tends to be a moron or two on a server, but I find actual living opponents to be far more interesting to play against than computer controlled ones. Even then, a 3rd party bot will probably be released anyway.
Granted, for the 360 version, there are more factors at play. XBL costs and a possible lack of broadband connection in particular(which confuses me, as a year of cable here costs about half as much as a 360 bundle).
Why didn't they just make a sequal to Quake3? Quake 2 was legendary in my list of games not because of its single-player, but because of its online community, and Quake 3 was also a behemoth simply because it supported the online community so well; once Rocket Arena moved from Quake2 to Quake3 things became golden. Why the fuck did they think "another single-player" game would be the way to go? Doom 3 was the lame single player, Quake is the series that we like because it competes with Unreal for that online market.
I played Quake2 for over 3 years and didn't give a fuck about the Stroggs or their lame war or the boring single-player, it was all about Deathmatch and then of course CTF. Quake4 should have been Zoid CTF reimagined. This game already disapointed me when it was announced. Is there even a railgun?
Hmm, so it's as dull as the videos made it look... too bad.
All of my favorite shooters -- Deus Ex, Max Payne, Half-life 1 & 2, F.E.A.R. probably soon to be added -- have had a significant storyline. I love games like Painkiller too. It's when developers throw in a half-assed storyline that I get annoyed.
Is this PC Gamer UK or US? Hopefully US, if so OMG!! They told the truth for once!!! Doom 3 didn't deserve the score it recieved nor did Farcry overall, but wow! I guess they really don't get enough ad revenue from Raven eh?
It's because they rush through rating of the games.. They're so hyped up about the game that it's like WHOA! The trees sway!! Holy fuck. Then soon after everyone sees that the swaying trees are the only thing good in the game.
I hope this is true. Maybe we can finally get game developers to stop making games with robot demons. It was cool once guys, but ffs, enough with the damn robot demons.
There are two FPS series worth looking into these days: Unreal Tournament, and Halo. That's it, that's all.
