The diablo splash screen is quite rare, there, but I'm guessing it's just an overhaul of battle.net.
Also: Every 30th splash screen or so has the numbers change to ".999_ = 1". Hee hee hee. (even though that's wrong. It's the math system that's flawed, not the logic. But lets not get into that.)
The conclusion of sc2 came about from the fact that:

I'd say it's more like every 50th screen or so.
(Another site posted that there's a 2% chance, and it took me 64, and 23 refreshes for me to get it twice.)

Good call. I didn't notice the globe in the pupils until I started trying to get the .999 = 1 thing eariler today, but then I couldn't put my finger on what the globe was from.
I'd say, at least, I'm betting it's StarCraft related. (So, to be consistent with my first post: Unlockable Kerrigan character in Dead or Alive 4.)
It shouldn't be a big announcement, otherwise they would've saved it for their con (literally).

If you decompile the 111.SWF flash file on battle.net and look at the code, you'll see that the images being shown are of an orc, zerg, terran, undead, night elf, diablo, starcraft .999_=1. The Flash file shows the orc, zerg, terran, undead, and night elf 94% of the time, diablo 2% of the time, and the .999_=1 image 3% of the time.
