Looks like the rumors on Xbox Forums were true. Shacknews is reporting that Lost Planet: Colonies, Universe at War and Shadowrun are free to play online with Xbox Live Silver.

Shacknews has confirmed that Xbox Live Silver members are now able to play some Xbox 360 games online, a feature once reserved for paying Gold subscribers.
Currently, only three titles allow free online play: Universe at War, Shadowrun and Lost Planet: Colonies Edition. Other games, such as Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War, still require an Xbox Live Gold subscription for online multiplayer.
It is believed the shift came about as a result of Microsoft's decision to provide all Games for Windows Live members with free online multiplayer, as all three free-to-play Xbox 360 titles allow cross-platform multiplayer with PC gamers.
Microsoft has yet to specify if this is a limited promotion or if all cross-platform games will sport free Xbox 360 online play from now on. Some speculate that this could eventually lead to a completely free Xbox Live experience, similar to what the company has just done for Games for Windows members.
...How about they just make XBLA games have free online play? Then I'll actually be able to justify buying Castle Crashers.

I just picked up Gears of War PC and LP:Colonies for PC..mainly because I prefer playing on my PC at times, which is another room from my 360. I also have Shadowrun coming in a few days so if anyone still plays, I'd be up to play. It does suck that Gears of War doesn't support cross-platform play though.
I expect that they're going to switch to paying for Live via marketplace purchases, thus will not charge for LIVE access soon.
If you think about it, you don't have to pay to enter a store (except costco?), but rather you can walk in and browse. The store purchases pay for the upkeep on the store.

sure, but in a store you can't just pop open a card table and start gaming with your friends without getting into trouble (aside from the cool stores, ie: most nerd game stores)

I agree with you on this. I hope we see the service go free over the next year. Certain or special content that must be paid for to be enjoyed will pay for the service. I only hope that don't handicap games and make us pay to play or see the end of them.

Gears has enough netcode problems on one platform, never mind cross-platform gaming.
More people need to play Shadowrun though, that game is supreme fun.

Shadowrun has a hardcore fanbase that plays it.
As I said yesterday, it's a shame that this wasn't the case when shadowrun first came out - it might not have been DOA.
Good for the people that still play Shadowrun I guess. I don't really know of anyone that still plays any of them though.
People who still play Shadowrun on 360 are already paying for Live. In other words: thanks for nothing, assholes!
Xbox Live should be free at this point. That, or have the common courtesy to not have ads on the Dashboard and give Gold members a discount on shit in the Marketplace. Unless it's free by the time my subscription runs up in the winter, I won't be renewing.
