Sony Said to be Working on 'Break Apart' PS3 Controller
According to gi.biz, Sony is working on a new controller for the PS3 which would theoretically break apart into two separate and working parts, each containing an accelerometer:
Quote:
Sony Computer Entertainment is working on a new controller for the PlayStation 3, which features the ability to 'break apart' into two separate units, each of which contains an accelerometer for 'Wiimote-like' motion-sensing functionality, GamesIndustry.biz understands.
It's not clear when the pad will be officially announced, but it is believed that working units have already been supplied to certain developer partners, according to sources.
The potential for new game types to be developed with the additional motion-sensing functionality should open up the PlayStation 3 to the sorts of gaming audiences that the Nintendo has been so successful at gathering with its Wii console.
Hopefully it wont be as useless as the current controller's motion sensing feature.
I my view, features like these have to be designed and built from the ground up when your developing the console itself, for perfect integration. These "tacked on" things never seem to work quite as good.
That's one thing I would like to see from the next generation of controllers that The Wii does right.
Having the ability to have the controller split like that is very comfortable.

If you make a product that's comparable to the Wii, but $400 instead of $250, it's not going to fly. Yeah, games are prettier and it plays Blu-rays... but your aunt and niece don't care, and they love Wii Sports and Mario Kart.

I actually really hate the way the separate controller parts cause me to slowly inch my hands farther apart as I play. Playing Mario Galaxy or SSBB makes me flail like a madman even when there's no discernable reason for my motion.

Isn't that because of the accelerometer?
I'm thinking just a split controller w/o the motion crap.

Dear Sony,
Not this generation. You already released a revised controller.
Next gen, and make it so that you can put stupid attatchments on it, so accessories such as light guns can be plugged into the controller. Or guitars, or bats.

Agreed. No matter how well this works, they already have an established controller. I'm not saying a new peripheral can't be successful (see: Wii Fit), but I just don't see this going far for them at this point in the game.

Because the controller is separated, my hands naturally "drift" as I play. It's sort of like when some people physically lean while playing shooters even though they can't actually see around the corner in the game, or crane their necks forward even though it doesn't make distanced objects appear any closer on the screen.
I'm pushing the thumbstick or d-pad to the right or left and my hand slowly creeps that way in an effort to "get farther" in that direction.
With a regular controller, my hands are forced together, so they don't get to drift in opposite directions.
When I read the title, I was thinking along different lines. A controller that, when thrown to the floor in frustration, will purposefully break into easy-to-reassemble pieces.
Well, at least this time they'll have a chance of making their controller somewhat useful. I believe the shape of the standard console controller makes motion sensing almost impossible. With the Wiimote, it's rectangular and you have easily mentally defined reference points for neutral orientation. With the Sixaxis, it's all curves. Figuring out which position is neutral is a crapshoot and unintuitive.

I just had the mental image of a busted controller forming back together T-1000 style.
I'd probably just get more pissed that it has the nerve to oppose me.
