The Office (UK) leading man Ricky Gervais (also responsible for the hilarious Extras) is set to cameo in a little-known upcoming 'video game' by the name of Grand Theft Auto IV. Shortlist, courtesy of CVG, has the story.
Quote:
Speaking to free magazine Shortlist, Gervais revealed that he performs three minute skits of never-before-heard material in Liberty City's comedy club, as well as gags from his recent Fame tour.
The Comedy Club is one of several extracurricular activities you can get up to in GTA IV, as well as bowling, darts and yes; drinking.
"It's a first - which always interests me," he said. "It was shot in New York, my favourite place in the world, and I got to wear a tight lycra suit as part of the digital process. No, hold on, that wasn't so good.
"Unfortunately they captured the whole horror, except I look slightly tougher. It is seriously a big deal, though. Games have outsold Hollywood for the past few years so it's nice to be a small part of that."
I remember reading somewhere that the comedy clubs in Liberty City were going to have actual comedians performing, and I thought, probably a bunch of unknowns or maybe even a certain comedian's album just synced to a virtual model ... but original content by a guy like Gervais? That's just pretty cool, unnecessarily cool.
God, I wish they'd at least announce a PC port of this... Otherwise I'm getting dangerously close to caving and buying an Arcade or something just to play this. And I don't want a 360 otherwise...
The comedy clubs sounds so awesome to me. I love stand up. I was wondering which comedians would appear in the game, now I know of one and I don't want to know more, I want to be surprised. If Gervais is one I assume the rest is also high end quality. Won't be surprised if I go in a club and hear stuff from Carlin, Charlie Murphy (he does good stand up, also was in San Andreas), David Cross etc etc.
Now if they managed to get the rights to use some of Bill Hicks' stand up, which fits just lovely with GTA dark humor & satire, I will go into a happiness induced coma.
Edit:
Robin Williams is a gamer, so I'll assume he'd be more than happy to be a part of this.
Henry Rollins has done some game voice work and is pretty counter-culture-type-guy.
Dave Chappelle is a gamer.
Damn. I was doing so well up to this point. I started looking forwards to GTA4 like 2 weeks ago, and then I was like "it is only 4 weeks away, I'll get it soon enough... no stress." Now I am officially hyped, and the next two weeks are gonna hurt.
The good news is that I got Thursday and Friday off work the week it launches. Sometimes the gaming gods smile at me.

There is a fantastic "best-of" Gervais podcast http://rickygervais.com/podcasts2.php that features Steven Merchant, his co-writer on The Office and Extras (and his agent in Extras) and Karl Pilkington, who is a phenomenon, and the endless obsession of Gervais and Merchant. Kept me laughing on a long drive last week, even though I had already heard the originals a few years back.

Murphy and Cross are good possibilities seeing how they both did voices in San Andreas.

The shot in front of the church, the helicopter rising into view, hell...even the shot walking through the upscale menswear store had me smiling. Niko cuts a fine jib in that suit!
