Eurogamer has an interesting interview with Gran Turismo's Kazunori Yamauchi (Click here).
Quote:
Eurogamer: When you look at the games which have come out since GT4 - with Forza Motorsport probably being the most notable - do you see things that you'd like to do, things that have moved the genre forward? Or do you develop Gran Turismo in a vacuum, ignoring the competition?
Kazunori Yamauchi: The latter is actually exactly fitting, I think. We don't reference any other games when we're making Gran Turismo - it's purely based on what we want to achieve as a game.
Actually, I have difficulty playing other games for over five minutes. A lot of the low-level quality just stands out so much in other games that I can't stand them! (emphasis mine).
Bit of a low blow about driving other games, but overall an excellent interview. He talks about car clubs, community features, friends lists, and of course, damage modeling. All of these are planned for GT 5: Prologue, so Prologue will see updates while we wait for GT 5.

Reason: Signature removal
True it does seem like a low blow, but he doesn't seem like the type of person to just call out a bunch of other games. I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of those lost in translation type things.
VideoGamer.Com: People are already asking for things that they want to be included in Gran Turismo 5, with damage modelling being top of many people's lists. Are we finally going to see damage in the final release?
KY: Actually we're planning to add damage to the game within Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.
VideoGamer.Com: Is this going to be a trial for the damage we'll see in the final Gran Turismo 5 or the full thing?
KY: We're not really planning for a trial or test version, we're going at it full speed. We'll see what happens.

Yes, because actually having to turn is a skill he doesnt possess... years of just bouncing off walls dulls that ability.
This man is dead to me anyways, so is this series. Thanks be to Zeus for turn 10!
While I had given up on GT being a true F2 competitor, we'll see how the damage modeling goes. If they can create a decent damage modeling system, then I'll feel a little better about GT. I'm still getting GT5:P because I'm a car whore.
Developing in a vacuum is funny, because that is (in my mind) part of what killed Detroit automakers- ignoring the advances the competition was making.
Seems like the tables are turned in the virtual car business.
Fuck him. I've long ago stopped paying attention to what a lot of game designers say about their competition. The proof is in the pudding, and so far Forza 2 is miles ahead of the GT franchise in terms of driving physics, damage, and car customization.

In case anyone is wondering what Seraph and I are saying via hipster music videos... Dude is full of bullshit and don't belive anything without hard fucking proof from him.
I also expect Gran Turismo 6 to come out less than a year after 5. It will start off with 1 car on 1 track and the rest will be pay2get patches to add features in.
I will belive that they have damage in their game when I see a video of it... and the controller is being used by someone I recognize from outside of Sony.

I guess he can't stand Forza 2 because it's so much better.
I own both the PS3 and 360 and have owned all the GTs/Forzas as well...
And Telefrog is still having sex with his xbox.
No way! That thing would RRoD almost immediately.
Seriously though, I give the GT series the nod in graphics (not a small one either, it's waaaaaay ahead of Forza on that) and in presentation. They both have their advantages and their disadvantages.
I'm not delusional enough to say something like "A lot of the low-level quality just stands out so much in other games that I can't stand them!" That's just arrogance or blind ignorance. Take your pick.

It is. The thing is, this is a graphics showcase and that's why it's being packaged the way it is and sadly it will work. For every fucking smoking dumb ass blond with a body that you could eat, there is a foxy brunnete that is hotter in the sack. But sometimes you go with the one who looks hotter...well for me most of the time.
I can see playing GT for a couple days than going back to Rfactor on the pc for mods and Forza 2 for sheer fucking awesomeness. But lets be honest GT looks amazing and fruitfuckers out their will eat it up.

I've owned all the GT's on psone, ps2. I own a ps3 and 360. Forza has trumped it. He's not having sex with his xbox, he's just speaking the truth.
Actually to be honest and less of a dick, I should say I thought Forza on the xbox was better than GT4. I didn't care for Forza 2 though which was disappointing. I found the graphics distracting. The scenery was bland and the cars were too shiny and "next-gen". They looked like mirrors. The gameplay and physics were pretty good though and that's what counts.
I'll have to wait until I actually play GT5 (prologue even) before I can make a judgement call on it.
When you were playing GT5, what did you not like about it?
Oh, I don't know. I guess I kind of like the bumper-car bouncing walls.
Every GT game I've played, I could actually win races by slamming into walls or cutting through the dirt. It's funny as hell, but pretty lame to play. Forza actually makes me work the turns.
