No Cross-Region Co-Op in Army of Two

A new entry in the What-The-Fuck-Are-They-Thinking files: Army of Two will not let you play co-operatively with a friend from another disc-region. From Sarcastic Gamer (via D'Toid), a note that appears in the EU manual for the 360 version of the game:
Quote:
“NOTE: The online game modes in Army of Two are not cross region compatible and is only supported between PAL discs”
Now I know for a fact that other games with co-op - Gears of War and Halo 3 for sure - let you play with anyone with a valid Gold account, regardless of where they're playing from. I understand not matching someone up with a player from another region, but not letting them play together at all is just inane. This is even more egregious in a game like Army of Two, which was built from the ground up around co-op play.

Dtoid, not D'Toid, sir. Not to be an ass.

And yes, it's pretty lame. Is there a reason why this is so? I can't think of any at the moment.

Guess I'll add this to the notes on Co-Optimus.

Correction, the initial build was built from the ground up to be a co-op game. After that build was eaten alive by select reviewers, EA put the game back on the burner, but in the process, nerfed, trimmed down and general cut back on alot of the aspects that made the co-op dependency. As it stands now, the game could be seen as a single player shooter with a slightly above average co-op mechanic, rather than a game built entirely around co-op (Which was the initial bar, no doubt).

But yea, that region business is a pretty screwy choice on someones part. Hopefully you don't have a good friend in the UK/US that you met over live, because you won't be playing this game together. /boggle

I guess this explains why the disc reads as "Army of Two (EU)" in my dashboard. No other game I have seen has that "EU" at the end.

Can any of our PS3 brethren confirm if this is the case on that version of the game?

It may be a stock limitation for lag purposes. If they're getting higher-than-expected lag, limiting the choices of people to play online with by region would give less lag due to closer proximity.

I play Halo 3 online co-op or deathmatch from time to time with a lot of local friends. Sometimes my brother in LA joins us (I'm in SF) and the lag gets bad for him. It could be just a shitty connection that he has...

Army of 2 also does not support LAN play, which sucks as I plan to be at a LAN next weekend, which has an internet connection shared across 60+ devices. Having the data go out to the internet, just to come back to the Xbox next to mine... seems kinda redundant.

I still say the game was built around co-op play. Playing co-op with someone is just a totally different experience than playing by yourself with this game. I'm not a fan of the single-player part of the game simply because your friend AI just isn't all that smart and you are constantly giving them orders whether passive or aggressive.

What I do like is that you can bring your purchased weapons into the co-op play. I also like that you can choose which level you want to play on (as long as you've at least touched the level). Certainly the game could be better, but as a full co-op option through the whole game I have to say it is somewhat enjoyable.

The manual for the PS3 version says the exact same thing.

Its dumb as hell and no other game has this limitation on the XBox. The same cannot be said for the PS3 however as a lot of online games are region locked for reasons best known to Sony.

This might be the answer here....? Lazy programming/boss directed deadline, if the PS3 was the lead platform for the development and already directed to be region locked, maybe they just didnt fix this from the PS3 version?

/shrug

Just a thought.

I know that Motorstorm at least was like that in the beginning, not sure if they patched it now though. And I think it also goes for UT3...?

I was about to buy this game, but I only know two other people with Asian 360s like mine, so now there's no way I'll buy it unless I hear they are planning too aswell.

This basically renders the game pointless to me otherwise.

Heh, I was wondering why it showed Army of Two (EU) in the dashboard. Pure bullshit.
