From ps3.qj.net we hear that Hideo Kojima isn't satisfied with Blu-ray capacity.
Quote:
In an interview, Kojima explained that his team had to compress many elements of Metal Gear Solid 4 to make it fit in the disc. While they managed to squeeze the game into Blu-ray, Kojima said the quality could have been better if there was more capacity to work with.
I failed to think on anything that can be said about a man who says that 50GB is not enough for his game. While his fellow developers are still using the 8.5GB Duel-Layer DVD.
learn to compress properly, i really doubt any game could be so big, if the devs really knew what they were doing.
Oh, nice sig btw.
You can bet that it is just more useless FMV. I have only played MGS1 and MGS2, but didn't MGS2 have like a 20 minute FMV right at the beginning?
This is a very Japanese thing... a lot of their game developers can't decide if they want to be game developers or storytellers. (ie: Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within)

Probably lots of videos in it or uncompress files so that it's hard to pirate it.
Best way to combat piracy? Make your game 50-100GB so people are more reluctant to download it.

Great thing about games; if you don't like what they are doing, don't play them!
I for one like story and plot, whereas most other games have some of the lamest attempts at plot I've ever seen. You get an opening cinematic that sets up a great story, and then nothing happens until the cryptic ending.
Looking at the HD video demonstrations, I'm guessing it isn't the textures that are taking up all the space.
Since they apparently can't stick multiple languages on a single disc, perhaps they decided to go with a 7.1 PCM soundtrack with dozens of hours worth of dialogue?
I love Metal Gear Solid because it's such a cinematic experience....I wouldn't have it any other way.
Disclaimer : I also enjoyed the Xenosaga series.
Sure BUT, why cannot it not be in-engine? Using video where the render is much more sophisticated (aka better-looking), breaks the continuity ... at least for me. You spend a majority of the game with characters that look one way, when you switch to something different you loose the immersion.
Eh, a lot of it is audio, probably uncompressed. I'm kind of bummed they're dropping the Japanese voices for the US release. At least this is a franchise where the english voice acting is usually ok.

If this game really is 50GB, then thats pretty much confirms that a lot of the cutscenes that may LOOK like realtime graphics, actually are FMV. This is a common lazy trick in a lot of games recently, when the hardware can't pump out the visuals required for a cutscene, but there is an abundance of storage space available.
