IGN brings word that the latest in Nippon Ichi's SRPG series makes it's way to the US this August.
Quote:
NIS America announced today that Disgaea 3 for the PlayStation 3 will be coming to the US. The next title in the Disgaea series, Disgaea 3 will arrive sometime in August 2008, and "makes a bold new step towards the next generation console with a whole new cast, story and game system."
For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Disgaea features immensely deep strategy RPG gameplay with a rich amount of humor and fantasy. The press release states that the third member of the series will feature a new object: the Geo Block. This object will give players access to terrain-altering abilities that will enable them to reach enemies on the battlefield they wouldn't normally be able to reach. Making a return to the series are the Geo Panels and the Item World, the latter of which gives players the option of exploring the world within any item in their inventory.
Definitely a must buy for me; I'm just surprised it's coming so soon. And wow...how good is 2008 looking for the PS3?

I saw a crazy video of some of the additions they're making to the gameplay. Things like not just stack and toss, but attacking with the stack and tossing multiples.

You're thinking of this:
Want.

I've always wanted to get into this series. Are the other games still difficult to find?
The PSP version is any easy way to give it a spin. Couple words of advice: If you dislike wacky, over the top characters you will dislike the story in the game. Also, it bombards you with numbers and options from the moment you start the game. Most of those can be safely ignored until you have a feel for a gameplay and want to start min/maxing stuff.
I've never even heard of this series. Was this popular in the US or did just miss it for the last few years? The trailer looks pretty cool though. I may have to go back and pick up the earlier games for cheap.

Sounds like a winner. Too bad I traded in my PSP for Orange Box a couple months ago...
Fuck...great, I may never be heard from again after this launches.
I can see the headline now:
"Man dies after spending 6 solid months in front of TV"
"Game controller had to be pried from his cold, dead hands."
When asked shortly before his death by his wife, "When are you going to stop playing that shit!?"
He only replied "When their levels are OVER 9000!!!"

It's popular among obsessive-compulsive JRPG players. It started life being published by Atlus (which tells you something, if you know about them), but was popular enough Nippon Ichi opened a US branch and started publishing games themselves.
The big notable thing about these games is they are strategy RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics or Jeanne d'Arc, but are very tongue-in-cheek. They are also well known for doing things that seem like cheating, but you are actually expected to do them. And the level cap is 9999 rather than the usual 99, with corresponding ridiculous stats.
On a personal note: shit, now starts the countdown until I REALLY want to have a PS3. Hopefully I won't fall into a worst case scenario where I buy the game but wait to buy a console for a while. We'll see.
