Phil Harrison has resigned as President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. Replacing him will be Kazuo Hirai, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. Harrison had been with the company for 15 years, helping on the original PlayStation platform.

I am grateful to all the PlayStation family for their incredible support, guidance and friendship. It has been a privilege to serve as part of the team and be inspired by them on a daily basis. I am so proud of everything PlayStation has achieved and will continue to support its future in every way I can.
His resignation comes days after Harrison discussed his frustrations with Japan.
Editor's Note - Having met Phil in person and witnessed firsthand how committed he was to the Sony cause, I would like to take this opportunity to wish him well in his future endeavors. - fitbabits

Kind of an odd time to let go, right after GDC. I would have expected a move like this a few weeks before the conference, so Sony could make an announcement about his successor at GDC.
I wonder where he'll end up after this. I'm sure any number of other companies would love to pick him up.

He's probably just retiring....after 15 years he probably wants to.
Oh my goodness. That really came out of nowhere. But maybe he's just frustrated with his job right now? Either that, or someone got the boot rather swiftly after speaking out so loudly
Weird, just when it looked like the Playstation name was back on the upswing. And that rumor about Atari, WTF? Why would he jump from one ship that, yeah looked like it was listing (is that the right nautical term) badly for the last year, but was starting to get back on course to one that sank to the bottom of the ocean years ago and has started to form a coral reef.
And now I'm hungry for fish, thanks a lot Phil (jerkstore).

Actually reading over the Atari speculation article at gamesindustry.biz, it doesn't look like they have any sort of factual information to back it up. It's just some crazy ass idea they got from an apparently random quote. Unless they have some insider information they're not allowed to publish, it's journalistic insanity.
“The idea of a handheld rivalry with Nintendo is an irrelevance. Those formats don't appear in our planning. It's not a fair comparison; not fair on them, I should stress. That sounds arrogant, maybe, but it's the truth. With the DS , it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen. But I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that."
- Phil Harrison
Peter Moore left after 602 days that the 360 was out Phil left 465 days after the PS3 was released. 602 - 465 is 137 the 137th day of the year is May 17th. On that day in 1521 Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, is executed for treason. Hmm by this logic I predict that Phil Harrison will be working at either Nintendo or Microsoft.
Don't deny the logic!

If he's really going to Atari they must have thrown a boatload of money to him out of desperation and he just made a money grab (can't blame him). At least we'll have plenty of amusing quotes from Crazy Kaz to look forward to.
I don't understand why Sony would axe him considering they're on the verge of releasing huge projects for the PS3 environment with Home and all the other things that go along with the next XMB iteration.
Not to mention Phil was really the face for the company's real step in the next generation with that GDC presentation from last year.
Based on that, I don't think he was axed. If he jumps to Atari, I'd be inclined to believe it's just a situation of wanting to move along in the vein of Peter Moore.
