I just received this statement direct from Microsoft:
Quote:
As a result of recent decisions made by Toshiba, Hollywood studios, and retailers, Microsoft plans to withdraw from HD DVD. Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360, but we will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Players in the market. As we stated earlier, we do not believe this decision will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. HD DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room, along with playback of the DVD movies they already own.
Finally. How odd it feels to see this happening when back in the day HD-DVD stood a reasonable chance. I feel kind of sorry for the early adopters.
Yes, those people got screwed hard. Considering all those HD-DVD commercials about how great HD-DVD was that aired constantly during the Soprano's, I think Toshiba owes a lot of people a ton of money.
Hell, this is the one time that a class action lawsuit sounds totally appropriate. If you buy into a new format and a year later they drop the format, they should have to give you your money back.
Do those movies stop playing? Are they even out yet on BluRay?
No and No.
My collection will be treating me fine for years. Both my movies and player don't seem to know or care that the format as a whole is dying.
I've been watching HDDVD movies for over a year that still aren't out on BluRay....pretty sure it's someone else who got screwed if they JUST bought BluRay. I have both and my library has benefited because of that.

Ahh, but the hardware is not completely obsolete, as the hardware can still playback DVD titles and scale them. If you look at the all the new advertising and literature for the Toshiba HD DVD players, they hype up the upconverting characteristics of the device. It just happens to also play a now defunct format.
I wish people would stop talking about it and start letting those prices of the discs drop so I can swoop in and pick up a ton of movies on the cheap.

Not really different then any other new unstable technology. Look at Blu-Ray stand alone early adopters. They are screwed now and must get all new players to use all the features of the upcoming discs.
But after all, Blu-Ray early adopters "knew what they were getting into."

Evil...that would stiffle half the industry. why would any company ever take a risk with new technology if people could just turn around and sue them.

Why? The same characteristics which you like about the HD DVD format, exclusive titles, also relates to BD as well.
