Capcom: Stop Whining over DMC4 Install Time on PS3
Devil May Cry 4 is hitting stores today here in the states, but our brethren over in Japan got it a few days early and were more than a little peeved at the PS3 version. Specifically the 22+ minutes of install time gamers must sit through before they can actually play the game. Well Capcom has responded to those complaints. The gist of their response? Call the Whaaambulance.

Hey, all. It’s true: the first time you drop your DMC4 Blu-Ray disc into your PS3 tray, you’re going to be treated to an exciting 22 - 25 minute load process as the disc spins a few gigs of data onto your hard drive. While the game is loading, you get to watch a really nifty series of screens that completely catch you up on the DMC4 backstory. Think of it as compressing the last three “seasons” into a single info blast, accompanied by some fantastic DMC artwork. It’s great for those new to the series and also a good refresher to serious fans (you can also check out all these screens again later in the Library mode).
If you don’t want to watch the “Previously, on Devil May Cry…” portion of the install process, go make a sandwich and grab a soda, then come on back.

Once installed — once, mind, not every time you play, as I’ve seen “reported” on certain web sites less interested in facts than in OMG histrionics — the PS3 version of the game has near-Super Nintendo speed load times.
The article also points out that this, or worse, is something PC gamers have been dealing with for years.
Damn straight! Back in my day we had to install every game. And configure drivers. With floppy discs. In the snow. With no shoes. Uphill both ways.

You're like me. You remember swapping 5 1/4" floppies out to play Might & Magic, or trying to get the right sound card drivers. This 23 minutes install would be a cakewalk.
And yes, the whole point of this post is so I can use the word 'Whaaaambulance' on the front page .
Not surprising with the downhill slide of the quality of news around here since I left the Inner Circle.

Console gamers worldwide flocked to internet message boards to whine about this problem for a good deal of time longer than it took the game to install.

I never got that (though I did play Wolfinstein 3D on a 5 1/4" floppy) but I certainly remember games like Betrayal at Krondor which came on something like 7 3.5" disks that all had to be installed, and X-Wing and Tie-Fighter which each came on 5 Floppies.

Ah, those were the days.
Fuck yeah! I still have my Betrayal At Krondor and TIE Fighter floppies.
Between this and the text in Dead Rising, I've lost a lot of respect for Capcom. You just can't keep telling your customers to fuck off every time you do something asinine.

No, Capcom needs to stop false advertising. They say that the 22 minute install reduces load times to the same speed of old SNES games, which is bullshit. Numerous sites have said that it only reduces load times over the 360 version by 1-2 seconds. I'm all for faster load times, but 1 second is NOT faster.
22 minutes once is a hell of a lot better than the alternative.
That is about the best I can spin this one.
What about the 360 version? Is the game so small that they can limit it to only the fast area of a DVD and obviate the need for an install or is it going to have longer loadtimes because they have to support the core/arcade SKUs?
Ah, just saw Siraris' post.
1-2 seconds reduction? Hmm.
22 minutes = 1320 seconds. So as long as you are subject to > 1320 load sequences(worst case) the install makes sense, or 660 best case.
I have nothing against having the option to install the game, but IMHO I shouldn't be forced to do it. Why can't they use regular caching instead? And what's the point when the X360 load times are only 1-3 seconds longer?
I'm not really that bothered, I'm all for shorter load times, though there will be a problem down the line when a lot of games install and you gotta make choices which ones to have on there... but it could be worse though they should have made it optional.
And people syaing only "1-2 seconds" shorter than 360 have it all wrong, though its not surprising with the amount of PS3 confusion on EvAv... its 1-2 seconds total, where as 360 has like 12+ seconds.

Eh. Yeah it's a hassle but if I had the option to reduce/eliminate load times with a time consuming install, I'd do it more often than not, regardless of the platform. I see why the console only crowd, which demands gratification in its simplest and quickest forms, might be miffed, but at the same time they'd be the same ones bitching about hellishly long load times in the event the HD install wasn't utilized.
