Sony discontinues 80GB PS3 SKU?

PS3Fanboy reports that the 80GB model of the Playstation 3 may be phasing out:
Quote:
An anonymous Best Buy employee has sent us a scan of an internal letter, which notifies employees that the 80GB system is being discontinued. "The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won't be replaced at this time," it reads. "It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time."
At this point, it's unclear whether it's Sony discontinuing this model, or if it's just Best Buy. However, due to the "closeout" comment, it's heavily implied that this is a Sony move.

And the SKU musical chair game begins another round...

Looks like it -- this'll teach me to submit news without reading all the categories.

Boy, there are so many SKU's these days that I have a hard time remembering which one I bought...The original was a 60GB, right? I think that's the one I have?

It seems like they're trying to make it less confusing and going to a single SKU. It's too bad the single SKU is the no backward compatibility one.

It's not like they're adding a SKU, and this is just Best Buy anyway.

I have a wild thought... How much is Sony losing on the PS3 these days? I wonder if they are considering discontinuing the PS3, or at least slowing down production and admitting defeat for this generation of the console war? I know this seems unlikely but think about this.... Now that it looks like Blu-Ray has won the HD war Sony may figure that the PS3 is no longer worth the expense. Perhaps to them, winning the HD war was all that really mattered.

Even I think my "wild thought" is a big long shot and probably not the case, but I suppose its possible...

Isn't the point of a console to have a unified machine base so that all users and developers can build on a solid foundation? Which PS3 am I supposed to buy?!

I was in GameStop tonight.
One guy brought a used XBox360 with only a 30 day warranty.
Someone else purchased a brand new PS2.
Both for ~ the same price (around $120).
What's my point?
I have none.
Just caught my attention, is all.

Yeah and most likely they put the used 360 almost as the same price as a new one but with a discount of around $30 to $50 or eve less..

I can do you one better.
Yesterday a man comes in and buys 2 360's. I said "lan hubs are over there if you are gonna be doing some lan."
He says "Nope. Just getting another in case the other breaks down."(Wow an informed customer...wait...
I say "Oh...uhm you could get a PS3, have you seen the commercials they are awesome."(I get 20 bucks for every PS3 from my manager...ya I am a sucker)
He says, "It plays the high def movies? I will get one some other day or a player"
I said, "It plays games too."
"Gears?" He asks
"no."
"Halo?"
"uhm...no." I shake my head knowing where this is going.
"Furtcha?" He asks.
"Forza racing?"
"Ya, does it play that?" he asks.
"No but it's got-"
"-O you guys have the Halo 360, I will take that one instead of the one with the harddrive."
"Well that's a bit more expensive."
Without missing a beat he says, "Oh and Halo and Assassin's Creed"
Fucker.
I hate that damn Halo 360. Its ugly and it costs too much. And people still try to get it when they can. Its a damn NASTY green box...jezuz.
And once again the damn mighty Xbox360 just keep solidering on without a single hint of buyer remorse. Now I admit I haven't had a red ring but I KNOW they exist obviously but MS is like Superman, no one even hesitates.

It's a long shot. There was a story recently saying how much money they make on every PS3 sold, they're not taking a loss on them.

That sounds interesting. Do you happen to have a link or remember where you read it?

So which is the "standard" sku now?

I'm still in the market for a PS3... that is unless I can score a Blu Ray player ultra cheap.

They aren't losing very much anymore because the price of manufacturing has come down a lot. It doesn't make any sense to quit now.

It's not a question. Best Buy is no longer selling them on their website as of now.

I've been wanting a PS3, and PS2 compat is a big issue for me. I just ordered one from Amazon - my hope is that Sony will announce whatever they're doing in the next 30 days (while I can still return). If they announce a new model without backwards compat, I'll keep it. Otherwise, back it goes

Well this is Sony, maybe someone there will approve a PS3 without a Blu-ray drive in it. Or, to flip it the other way around, take out the HDMI interface and maybe something else that's unnecessary, like the ethernet connection.

... I would really love some good, PS3 exclusives. My shiny machine is getting bored just folding. :/

Sony cannot release a PS3 - Blu Ray, The games are on blu ray.

Or sonys new move, the new 35 gig ps3's for 299. It has the hardware PS2 chips built in. So full backwards compatibility. The feature that is missing is blu ray so you can't actually play PS3 games on it.
