While speaking to Reuters about the success of Rock Band's DLC, (2.5 mil downloads so far) Electronic Arts worldwide head of music Steve Schnur was asked about the fesability of expanding the downloadable song model to other genres of games, such as Madden or Skate. His answer:

"That's certainly something we're interested in,"
This is both the peril and the promise of DLC. Being able to update some of the ancillary features of a game via download is cool. Being forced to update some features is not as nice.
Titles like the "Madden" football series, the Tony Hawk skateboarding franchise and the venerable "Grand Theft Auto" games are well known for their extensive soundtracks. Offering gamers the ability to replace their soundtracks every few months after the initial release is not only technically possible with today's new-generation consoles, but also on the horizon.
It would be optional content. If you want it, buy it. If you don't want it, don't buy it.
Oh I know Mantooth, but it sure is fun to pick on tactics like this. If GTA4 had some cool songs packs for the radio stations that replaced the generic crap thats sure to be in the game then I'd be all for it.
Of course GTA:VC proved that a killer song list is possible without charging the bejesus out of people via some digital marketplace.

In the year two thooooouuuuuusand....
For some reason the the video game market went back to 8bit systems and you'll have the option to replace the generic music and graphics that come with the game.

The fuck?
They do realize that the custom soundtracks feature is built into the 360 right?
Yeah. Unless its way, way cheaper to get the songs for the game, instead of buying them on iTunes and streaming or transferring them to Xbox, this plan makes zero sense. And even then, you figure people would rather pay the 99 cents, burn a CD, and keep it on the Xbox or wherever else they would like.

And yipee-yahoo, Microsoft caved in to some developer demands and made that a feature that the devs can turn off at will.

Why would anyone need downloadable songs for madden? You can stream songs on your 360 and they play as the regular songs do on 360 games...with the games sounds playing as they normaly would and it shutting down the games soundtrack if you have your own songs playing.
Am I missing something?

Now if there were some sort of synergy here, where I could download a song and use it in ALL my EA games, that would actually be kind of nice. If the data's already on the hard drive for use in Rock Band, being able to let Madden or something else play it back could be an extra bonus.
Do I believe they'll actually do that? No way.
(Oooh, side thought: If other games included Rock Band tracks, that'd be a major incentive to get me to play a game I might not otherwise. Sort of like how they made a version of the Halo theme for GH3, why not put a playable version of another game's theme song right on the disc?)
Any 360 doing that nees to have the guys responsible for the decision be punched in the groin for being dicks.
Nope, it's always been that way. I remember complaining about it, for two reasons: Artsy fucks would likely turn it off and make me listen to their shit, no matter how many times I played through their damn game; and this situation.

I don't understand all the negative reaction. This can be a positive; lesser known bands can use it to give away their music to create buzz, and even better known bands can use discounted mp3s through the game as a promotional tool. Regardless, EA will have more music to put in the game for everyone to listen too, and you don't have to buy the tracks if you dont want them.

I think you're misunderstanding ... this would be selling the music that's already in the game; so you like the track, you go buy the mp3 through the game interface and EA gets a cut of the money.

The article seems to be talking about it more as an alternate soundtrack, even though your method would be awesome, as sometimes, there are some good tunes in games.
In my dream world this would mean that Madden would ship without any of these "EA Trax." I don't need music in my football game.
I also would like for John Madden to be included in the MADDEN FRANCHISE. I also would like for the game to be progressively, noticeably better rather than roughly the same to somewhat worse year after year.
The Next Gen Madden games might be the most disappointing thing of this generation.
