Metallica are in talks to premiere the first single from their next studio album on a new version of the Rock Band video game.
MTV senior vice president of home entertainment, Paul DeGooyer, made the announcement that Rock Band manufacturer Harmonix and MTV are planning to premier a string of new songs on updated versions of the hit computer game, the biggest draw of which is Metallica.
He told Rocky Mountain News: "There are a couple of things we've committed to, one of them with Metallica for example. They've reserved the right to give us their first single from their new album for the game."
Apart from this golden nugget of information, there’s no hint of what the track is called or when it will see the light of day. Metallica are currently holed up in the studio working on their ninth studio record.
Metallica fans are like battered wives...we keep getting hit in the face and yet still go back to them...

I love that Rock Band is now starting to be seen as a real platform for music, and that groups like Metallica are taking it seriously. But I, like CaptStu, have given up on Metallica.

Everything between Justice and St. Anger was pretty weak, but St. Anger really grew on me. I don't like half the album, but the other half has given me hope. Frantic is a great song to run to.

This is the more exciting aspect of this for me too. While Metallica may not be the band they used to be, they are still a powerful force in the biz and it is exciting to think about what the future holds for gaming and music.

I disagree...although admit no will one will ever be sure. Everything I have ever read about Cliff points to him being a person who would have at the very least entertained this idea as a means of forwarding the music into another frontier.
Again, this is coming from a simple fan who has read a lot on the band's history and of Cliff Burton, however, it is only my opinion.

"Its really good to see you rocking out and having fun, living like you just begun, excepting life and what it brings, I hope tomorrow you find better things."
This isn't a big surprise. Apparently there was a hidden AFI track in Guitar Hero III that was just revealed. Radio stations here in San Fran have been playing it.
a "new version" of Rock Band? as in a sequel? was hoping they'd push this platform without a sequel for a long while...
This is Metallica we're talking about. It took them almost 3 years to squeeze out St Anger. And you know they weren't spending that time on slick production values.
Does it make anyone else uncomfortable when old media refers to these types of things as "computer games"?
Im not sure why, but it always makes me just shake my head at their antiquated worldview. Its not so much my desire for them to be "hip" or "with it", more just that this lack of precision bares their ignorance so blatantly.

It is a shame too, as that was thier best as far as I am concerned. Though everything that predates it is still really good.

Isn't Rick Rubin producing the new one? I'm also in the "haven't been interested in Metallica since Justice" crowd, but I'm still a bit curious about how that collaboration is going to turn out.
