New CoD and Guitar Hero coming 'on an annual basis'
Activision Blizzard, the new company formed by a merger between Activision and Vivendi, has revealed that it will be making new games in franchises like Call of Duty and Guitar Hero "on an annual basis".
It's a move that sounds a lot like rival publishing behemoth EA's strategy of pumping out new versions of its core titles every year. EA has been criticised by some gamers for focusing on this model of publishing over high quality new games.
Speaking in a conference call today, Robert Kotick, chairman and CEO of Activision, said: "You can expect virtually every one of those properties (its 10 multi-million unit-selling franchises) will be exploited on an annual or close to annual basis."

Gamers have nobody to blame but themselves. Who buys the same basic game, year after year after year after year? WE DO!
Tom Clancy titles (I buy them!)
Call of Duty series (I buy them!)
Guitar Hero series (not me)
Most sports titles (not me)
Some racing games (not me)
Many others (too many to mention).
There is so much regurgitation in gaming, but why not? If it sells, would I stop regurgitating the same basic game over and over? Of course not! Only an idiotic business would stop producing what sells.
Call of Duty 3 was a Call of Duty in name only in terms of quality 'cause Infinity Ward didn't actually make it. Whereas Call of Duty 4 was actually a quality title that improved the series.

Blame? Us...
I buy none of those, so I'm innocent.
Now, slap the Final Fantasy name on something.....

Why not? If the engine is there and they can crank out compelling new content, I don't mind an annualized schedule for good games. I do like how they specifically said they'd be "exploiting" the properties. I think "taking advantage of" would have better connotations, but that's just me.
Yikes. Am I the only person who doesn't have a problem with this? At least with Guitar Hero, a new GH game every year sounds like a good thing to me. CoD is a big of a tougher sell, if they kept on doing WWII every year I'd balk, but if they come up with some other periods/settings to do it in, then sure. Every year is fine, at least to me.
