Details are scant, but interested PS3 owners will first have to upgrade to the recently released firmware 2.00 before downloading the still unreleased DivX decoder itself. DivX gets a major bump in living room support, while Sony continues to blur the lines of entertainment console and multimedia PC. Once again, we wonder why Sony didn't do this sooner. But once again, we're happy nonetheless.
Will this have an impact on movie sales for the Bluray behemoth?
If this is true, I don't know if I'll need my XBMC anymore (assuming Divx also means Xvid). It'll be nice to not have two huge black boxes on my desk. Now I can drop it down to one...

...or paint one of 'em...
Is there a way to stream shoutcast stations on the PS3? I use my XBMC for just such a purpose.

Wonder if this will bring MS around to doing the same for the 360.
It has been confirmed by the DivX guys that MS is in talks with them. BTW DivX support on PS3 means Sony has to pay DivX. Are they really prepared to do that?

I don't know. Microsoft is making a lot of money off of their rental service. With such an established service for publishers to make money off of their content I don't see a whole lot of reason for Microsoft to open up.
Think of Apple and the iPod. There's nothing technically stopping the iPod from playing DivX movies, but Apple makes a ton of money selling shows and movies through iTunes. Why bother opening up the lock-box to a bunch of hooligans who want to pirate movies if they can get people to pay instead.
Actually, having talked through this, I wonder even more why Sony does not have a movie download service up and running yet. o_O

Nice, this is good stuff.
I too use XBMC (which is amazing, btw) and it would be nice to have another way to stream my movies. XBMC has literally been the only thing I've used my Xbox for, for about 2-3 years now.
Edit: But then again... XBMC supports pretty much every format, including ogm, so I'll probably be keeping my Xbox around for a long time.

Damn that's right. I've got Cowboy Bebop in .ogm. Well looks like XBMC stays. Or I don't stream it and just watch it on my computer.
It's pretty dumb that the console makers don't support Ogg formats considering they're absolutely free to implement and both of them have plenty of floating point processing power to spare on it.
XMBC has been amazing. I recently purchased 5 seasons of Scrubs and 7 seasons of Sout Park (couldn't find the rest), ripped them all and put them on my Xbox. Now I watch two episodes each night with the missy in bed before going to sleep, and I don't have to worry about disc change. Would be great if I could put them on my 360 in my living room as well (ripping them too a loooong time), but right now I have to have all the box sets in my games drawer and change discs from what I want to see... wow, I just realized how demanding people are for having everything as easily accessible as possible. Is it silly?
As for the actual topic; best PS3 news ever, I'm counting on MS stepping up on this.
