Home Still Coming This Year - November/December Beta
A lot of people were surprised to hear that Home was pushed back to Spring 2008, but luckily, that isn't really the case. In an interview with Gamespot, Phil Harrison confirmed that Home will be open for beta testing to all PS3 owners come late fall/winter.

Talking about Home, the executive said as far as he was concerned, the release delay meant nothing had changed. He said, "We will still be opening in late November/early December for general beta testing. So, the commercial start of Home will be pushed out later, but you will still get the experience this year."
This is a welcome relief, as many people are looking forward to the features that Home provides. Curious exactly what "commercial" release means.
Well...I'd say this a pretty good move on Sony's part. It'll alleviate the frustration of the hardcore PS3 owners that really cared, and the other PS3 owners probably aren't even aware yet.

I think charging for Home, which is essentially an unproven interface, would be stretching it quite a bit. If they were to do that, it would fail so hard it'd make the 32X look like a success story.

Yes its essentially an improved ui. It's also an improved ui rendered in 3-d with tons of content including mini games. This cost them money to develop it. I would not be the least bit suprised if they charged a one time fee to download and activate the software.
Sony is bleeding money and they need to makeup the difference somewhere.
What's the difference between the "commercial" and "general beta" releases of a free application?
They can push out any old pile of crap as the 'general beta' and you're not supposed to complain if it's buggy, laggy, unfinished and unpolished.
When they 'release' it - it's supposed to 'just work'.
And personally, it's a bit of bullshit spin to say that Home is 'still coming this year' if it's only showing up as a beta. Beta != release. It's still delayed.

Considering the feedback it's gotten so far, nobody is interested in paying money for Home. The place would be a ghost town. Not too many people are actually interested in home to begin with, you start charging for it, and as said, another disaster.
