Yes lady and gentlemen. Everyday someone says the following line. Hey! Someone put HD in my Console. Why? Because apparantly only 30% of Xbox 360 Owners and 50% of Playstation 3 Owners realize that their console is actually capable of outputting an HD Resolution image.
On top of that, only about 40% of PS3 owners are "aware" their system as a Blu-Ray player. And only about 50% of that 40% have actually used it as a Blu-Ray player.
At least...according to everyone's favorite statistical analysys firm: The NPD Group.
One thing I haven't seen in quite some time is the HD penetration rate into US homes. Last I saw it had crept up over 12%, but that was over a year ago. Either way I don't think these numbers are terribly surprising, and in fact, if anything I'd say they are right on par for the course. It looks like Sony is doing a much better job though marketing their console as a hi-def entertainment device.
That's actually pretty interesting. The Xbox 360 I can kind of understand, the PS3 seems pretty rediculous though. How do you NOT know it plays Blu-Ray?
P.S. Thank you for edging out "Pre-Teen Raider" on my front page. *whew*.

Well, when you plaster "TRUE HD" on half of your ads, that is likely to happen.
Also, Joe consumer isn't buying the PS3.

Reposting my post from the thread in the console forums, it's worth noting :
Oh, this gets much better if you go on to the handhelds :

The study also analyzed user awareness surrounding portable systems, and found that current owners and likely purchasers of PSPs are most aware (52 percent) that they can watch movies and videos. Music playback and photo viewing are in second and third place at 49 and 43 percent, respectively. As for DS users and likely purchasers, 57 percent are aware there is a touch-screen, 53 percent know about the dual-screen, and 49 percent are aware of stylus function.
Yeah, I think they must have polled the world's dumbest sample group. Not knowing that the DS has a touch screen, or two screens for that matter?
EDIT : If this quote doesn't prove that they polled people who have no idea what the hell they're talking about, I don't know what would.

I said it once, and I'll say it again: Sony, MS, and all these HD-DVD and Blu-ray pushers, including the people on this site, VASTLY overestimate the amount of people who actually have or even care about HD.

Ok that is fucking impossible. Not knowing the DS has two screens, a touch screen, and a stylus? What. The. Fuck.
If you have a DS, there is no way that you could not know that, if you're thinking of purchasing one, it is almost impossible that you would not know that before buying.
I have to concur, this is the dumbest sample group ever.
What's even worse. HD games which suck on a SD, like Blue Dragon or Dead Rising. And designteams not caring about the receiving end of the pipeline in that respect.

The only thing I could possible imagine happened was that they canvassed people buying these machines for friends and family and had no idea what it was they were getting.

If that is the case, I suggest that they try and pick a sample group with a bit more balance. At least make sure that "potential purchasers" are buying for themselves.
But I think it's more likely that people buy stuff just because they heard about it being the "next big thing" when it came out. I bet more than a few Wii sales were made to people who bought one simply because other people couldn't get one. (btw this shortage of the Wii is complete bullshit, there is no way that they should be unable to meet demand at this point)
I encountered one of these cases the other day. Came over my friends house and he had a PS3 hooked up to his 1080p 50" HDTV. Having never played Resistance, I told him to fire it up. He had the damn thing hooked up via regular composite cables running at 480(i?). I almost had a fit, it looked no better then PS2 and he thought there was nothing wrong with it. I had him run out and buy an HDMI cable, while I setup his PS3 to connect to his WiFi network and I don't think I have ever seen him happier.
Sidenote, Resistance is nothing special after a few hours with it. Nice story i guess, but other than that, standard fare WW2 shooter with aliens instead of Germans.
Like anything you really have to make the "buying choice simple"
HD is one of those things that companies have made really hard and expensive.
First could someone just give me a demo head 2 head of Blue Ray and standard DVD?
The one I did see made me wonder what all the fuss was about. I do own an HD TV set but use a Bittorent enabled device to download movies in 1080p.
Seemed like a cheap way to avoid all the fuss until they sort out format etc.

That makes no sense. If you do not have a hd device why would you care to begin with? No one from the forums makes a big deal about HD anyways, especially regarding the number people that can take advantage of it.

Clearly I've gotten a different impression from people on this site (and MS/Sony) than you have. Fair enough.

Actually, as fucked up as this is, many people cant see the difference. I got a HD cable box finally a couple years back. My wife was watching something that was also available in HD, so I was like Hey.. why arent you watching it in HD. So we switched stations, and she couldnt tell the difference at all. I realize cable HD aint the greatest, but the dif was still night and day.
From that point on, I went on a bit of a mission with the can you notice HD vs nonHD, I would say greater then half the people I asked couldnt notice the difference. Of all the women I asked ( probrably about 8 ), 1 noticed the difference!
... I dont get it myself, but apparently it just aint a big deal to alot of people.
Then again, my parents run Windows 95 at 800x600 at 50hz on a crt monitor and think everything is fine.... I get a headache in about 7 seconds.
I remember a few months back reading that something like half of all people with HD TVs that are hooked up in such a way that they aren't getting an HD signal DON'T REALIZE that they're not watching it in HD.
"These respondents, compromised of males and females ages 6 to 44, are qualified owners of at least one next generation system (PS3, PSP, Wii, NDS, Xbox 360). In addition, non-owners were captured in order to further probe on next generation system purchase intent and other areas."
So 6 year olds who don't own the systems involved were counted? Yeah, that makes sense. These numbers are junk.
