It happened in Japan at the Playstation Premiere. Hideo Kojima showed off gameplay of Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PS3 for the very first time, reports 1UP.

And here's what everyone's been waiting for. Hideo Kojima demonstrated the gameplay segment of Metal Gear Solid 4 on actual PS3 hardware for the first time. Kojima showed Snake using his camo suit to disguise himself as a bronze statue, hide in barrels and trash cans. He also showed Snake knocking down enemies rolling the barrel while he is still inside it. After feeling some discomfort, Snake "revives" as he is given a female idol magazine. The producer also revealed that an online multiplayer mode will be in the game and more details will be announced at the 20th Anniversary Party next week.
So, arousal apparently brings you back into focus or something? I'm quite sure there are plenty of ways to "revive", but I think it's pretty funny that one of those ways for the old man is to "get excited". Giggitty, giggitty!
Wasn't some of the early footage of the game running in real-time with camera control mapped to a Playstation controller? I could be mistaken, but I seem to remember seeing something like that. If that wasn't running on the PS3, what was it running on?
Overall, the fact that this news from this story is focused on the game running on 'actual PS3 hardware' is downright comical. Seeing the game running on the real hardware shouldn't be some huge event, it should simply be expected and commonplace that the game should run as promised on the hardware for which it was intended.
When people look at videos for 360 titles or Wii titles, they don't ask themselves, "Yeah, but how will it look when it is really running on the hardware?" People just assume that footage of a 360 title will look the same when running on the 360, and likewise for the Wii. Yet for the PS3, we've seen again and again how early screen shots and footage does not match the final gameplay, so much so that when a piece of software actually runs on the PS3, it is some big to-do.
Oh, and I hear Snake picked up barrel-throwing from a certain giant ape.
Edit: I'm much more interested in seeing screen shots of this...

A watercolor look for games? Could be excellent!

Well, I never picked up the MP re-release they did for Snake Eater on the PS2 and I heard it was a blast so I'm glad I'll be able to try it out with MGS4.
Any Kam, this wasn't a pre-rendered vs in-game debate or actual hardware vs whatever. It's news because all the videos to this point (even the in-engine ones) were cinemantics and whatnot. They hadn't showed too much gameplay at all to this point, and what they did show was from like 2 years ago. It seems like you are trying to start an argument that isn't even there.
It was news when we had gameplay footage for MP3 or Halo 3, so why not when we have footage for MGS4?
The online multiplayer in MGS3 was surprisingly fun and competently done. Why shouldn't they include it in MGS4?
For the exact same reason I don't think Metroid Prime should have it - its not the focus of the series, and only serves to bloat the project. I'm not a friggin' hypocrite.

Turning into a bronze statue?
It's like the camo suit is the MGS version of the raccoon suit from Super mario bros. 3.
Haha. I almost expect Donkey Kong to be the source of these rolling barrels. Next thing we'll see is Snake being provided with a big sledge-hammer for barrel breaking.

Actually, for Halo, I do actually say that.
Most Nintendo games are ORIGINALLY shown as gameplay, though.

He IS going to be in Smash Brothers, you know. You WILL see him do that.
Holy crap, I had forgotten Snake was in Smash brothers! Yippee!

MGS3 : S had the multiplayer added in, and it was a pretty big part of Portable Ops too. It seems like they're trying to integrate it into the series, and if they can do it with the camo working well, it could be a lot of fun. Of course, if people just try to play it as run and gun deathmatch, it won't work.

One thing I don't know if people always remember is MGS cutscenes have always been in-game, never FMV's. I remember in MGS2 when I had the Body Armor on Raiden near the end, and for the a 10 minute cutscene Raiden had body armor on.
Yeah, it's silly. So what? When has this series NOT been silly?
There were so many stupid things hidden in Metal Gear Solid.
Seriously, I was just trying to convince myself I wasn't the only one who remembered that Snake Eater, the best in the series, was FILLED with absurd shit.
And when it became Subsistance? Fuggetabaudit.
Kagger: Fuck yeah. Wearing the poop camo, the alligator hat, and having the fifteen or so crossbow bolts you never removed sticking out of him like a pin cushion made EVERY scene hilarious.
