It wasn't clear at first if this ad was a special deal specific to the electronics retailer or if it's indeed a retail-wide price cut instituted by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). As it turns out, a merchandising manager (who wished to remain anonymous) at one of the world's biggest retailers has confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that the price drop is indeed retail-wide and it's scheduled to take place on July 12, although the first wave of ads to promote the PS3's new price won't kick in until Sunday, July 15.
Many analysts have speculated that Sony would drop the price on the expensive console this year, and some even predicted that it could happen this summer. It's starting to look like they were right. We're sure to find out much more next week when Sony holds its press conference at E3.
We already have a gallus thread about this over in the Console Games section of the site. Because of that, I've closed that thread.
Oh, and kudos to speedy1961 over at CAG for stealing Sony's thunder.
Editor's Note - thanks also to EvAv member Siraris spotting the CAG post. - fitbabits

Awesome. I know one of my friends who is a huge MGS nut will be happy to hear this.
I'll still be holding off until it is $400 and some great games (to me) are out on it. . . I bet I'll be able to afford one on Xmas 2008 and hopefully White Knight Story will be out then and Final Fantasy XIII will be within a year.
Really sucks for Sony IMO. They had the advantage with having their press conference the day after Microsoft. They could announce a price cut, and MS would be sitting looking stupid if they announced it later in the week. Now MS can decide if they want to announce it at their press conference.
Not even 1 year an a price drop already I remember when I said they were going to drop the price soon, about time. Anyway I'm still not buying until is around $250 ( Yes I type the sum right) and they release a slim version.

The PS3 is like the "Titanic", thought to never be sunked. XBOX360 is the many passengers on the "Titanic" that believe in the same concepts(graphical visuals). Then along came an iceberg(Wii).

Assuming this is true (and I'm not convinced), I'm surprised it happened so soon, seems like a bit of a climbdown for Sony at this stage. Given that Sony's marketing has been emphasising the power/'premium' nature of the PS3, a price cut surely undermines their whole marketing strategy, and it'll be fascinating to see just how many extra they sell after this...
I borrowed my co-workers PS3 for a couple weeks last month...and honestly, it barely got used because there just isn't that many great games for it. After that ho-hum experience, Sony needs more than a price drop to get me excited about their console. They need kick-ass Triple-A games!
Abner - They picked the 12th so they could announce it at their E3 press confrence and have it be a big, sudden deal. It would have been too, if it hadn't been for those no-good, meddling kids. I mean, no good, meddling internets.
Good move by Sony but I'm still of a mind there are no games drawing me to the system at any price...for now. Xmas may be the buy time for me.

Cool, drop it about a hundred dollars more and it's in line with a premium 360. Actually, not that true, as the premium 360 still includes compnent cables in the box, providing HD out the gate, and the PS3 still has the non-HD conposite cables...
And with the trolling done I'm seconding the need for games. Mine still is sitting there, so alone, so unloved.
Good so far. Perhaps MS will now drop their's about $50 to $100. And fix the console returns issues they have.
Meanwhile, Nintendo continues to make money hand over fist and steal market share by making a product that is reasonably priced and works as advertised. What a daring, unique business model!
Can't we get some used ps3's for like $400 as is right now? Man I want a ps3 because I really like calling all cars, I'm really looking forward to team ico's next game, and drake's revenge and ratchet and clank.
I'll probably wait 4 years for it to drop to $200-300 unless I get a good job
edit: also I think it's cool that the two most recent news stories are this and microsoft extending it's 3 ring of death warranty. Two huge stories that have been speculated on all year.
