Buy a PS3? Get 5 Free Blu-Ray Movies

Actually you get five free Blu-Ray movies with the purchase of any Blu-Ray player, but the PS3 is the big hook here. From Gamespot.
Quote:
From July 1 to September 30, customers who purchase qualifying Blu-ray players--yes, the PS3 qualifies--will receive five free Blu-ray movies from a list of 21 choices.
The participating movies are:
Babel
Black Rain
Blazing Saddles
Chicken Little
The Corpse Bride
The Devil's Rejects
The Guardian
Hart's War
Invincible
The Italian Job
Kiss of the Dragon
The Last Waltz
The Omen [2006]
Pearl Harbor
The Phantom of the Opera
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Species
Stealth
Stir of Echoes
The Transporter 2
Underworld: Evolution

Is this from any retailer? I'd assume so.

Also, this still isn't incentive to buy a PS3. It's a bonus.

While it is a cool promotion, I actually couldn't pick out five movies on that list that I'd want to see, nevermind own on an HD format.

Amen to that. Five free movies is great but not when they're stuff like Pearl Harbor and Stealth.

I am surprised to see Corpse Bride on there though. Definitely the gem in what is otherwise a selection that's pretty much garbage.

If they threw BBC's Planet Earth on that list, then I'd maybe consider it... but I'd still prefer to see a price drop first.

Well that's not a bad deal at all. I'd do that if the PS3 was 399.00

If I were forced to pick it would be these 5. Blazing Saddles is definitely the best of the bunch, Kiss of the Dragon is a decent action flick one of Jet Lee's first US flicks. The last 3 are just the least awful of the rest in my opinion and would at least look good in HD.

Blazing Saddles
Kiss of the Dragon
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Underworld: Evolution
The Corpse Bride

Thing doesn't have any games...might as well watch movies on it...Who still buys movies anymore? Same people who still buy cds? I used to buy movies but after you watch them 2-3 times you're stuck with a big stack of dvds you don't want to watch anymore...
Seems like a shallow attempt to try and trick people into buying a ps3

I have no need for HD dvds yet...the normal ones look just fine. I'll wait until there is a clearcut winner or consensus that they both will be around in which case i'll get a player that works for both.

I was going to say I'd be moving my eventual PS3 buy up to coincide with this deal, then I saw the list. I can't find 2 movies I want from that list. Oh well, I guess it's back to waiting on a Jak or Ico team game.

Sony obviously wants people to buy PS3s, there's no trick about it. It's like saying the King Kong HD-DVD is a "trick" to try to get you to buy the HD-DVD addon. There's no trick to it, it's a simple, tried and true, promotion strategy.

Secondary to the console wars is the HD disc wars, and this is where Sony has an advantage over MS. Every PS3 is a Blue-ray player, unlike the HD-DVD addon which requires a second purchase. Again, this is secondary, but don't think someone on both sides isn't looking at this.

For everyone that takes Sony up on this deal, it really raises the average attach rate for movies to players for Blu-ray. From some perspectives, it's a pretty smart move on Sony' part.

There are five categories (5 different studios I think?) and you pick one movie from each category, so there's even less choice (scan) .

That being said, nobody is interested in Babel? And too bad Invincible likely not the Werner Herzog film.
