Red Steel 2 announced

From a French gaming website comes confirmation that Ubisoft has officially announced the sequel to Wii launch title, Red Steel. Link to Google translation of article.

Quote:
Information comes us straight of Cannes where the IDEF is held. Ubisoft comes at the moment to officially announce that the development of Red Steel 2 is on the rails.

Far from being a surprise since we speak about it already here, this continuation will take again the best ingredients of the first episode, and will add some innovations in order to make forget the defects of this last, like the approximate gameplay. Red Steel 2 will be available on Wii in the current of the year 2008, and cherry on the cake, a online mode will integrate this new opus, which, wish, will be it with the height of the hopes of the players having already touched the first.
Development is "on the rails"! And an online component as well? Well, if that isn't a clear confirmation, I don't know what is.

If it is true (and there are conflicting reports now), I'm all for it. I mean, I never got around to trying the first one (it took me so long to just find the console that I lost interest), but with online play, rest assured, I'll be there.

Cool, i liked the first one, it lacked a certain something, but it was a nice game nonetheless. And it sounds like it's only getting better

The first one wasn't "good", but it wasn't as bad as most reviews made it out to be. It was "average" from what I've played. A friend of mine owns it and enjoyed it quite a bit. We played some multiplayer a couple times and had a decent time. The controls weren't as bad as some reviews led me to believe.
The entire game could obviously use some improvements though, so a sequel is welcomed.

The sword fighting was absolutely horrible though. Reviews were spot on about the sword fights.

I'm still not really interested in games about the Yakuza though, so I probably won't bother with the sequel unless it gets great reviews and is dubbed a "must have". I don't see that happening though.

Edit: Damn it! My thousandth post was about Red Steel! What a waste!

The first was a big "Meh", but it had some fun gunfights.
Try to make this one suck less, fellas.

And please, please hire better VAs, writers, and get some decent cutscenes.

Red Steel's got potential. Here's hoping they fix things like developers sometimes manage to do when they get a second shot.

Resident Evil 2 is remembered as the game where Capcom got it right. The original was just tonnes of unfulfilled potential.

RS was a fun game that should have been delayed in order to polish it up.

I enjoyed the first one, too, and while it wasn't an A game by any stretch, it wasn't as bad as a lot of people made out. They need to tweak a couple of little issues with the controls, fix some nagging bugs (like floating enemies), and upgrade the graphics engine. The level design was excellent, and swordfighing got pretty cool near the end once you learned more moves and combos. I even thought the voice acting - generally - was pretty good. The one liners the grunts said were just horrible, though. Definitely need to redo that.

Amen.

That was my biggest gripe with Red Steel. The stuff that happened when you weren't running around gunning down bad guys was lame as hell.

Is the first one a game I should try out, even as just a rental? As you know, most of the reviews for the game were awful, though you guys are saying it was under-rated. However, the sword fighting seemed like the main draw, and without those, isn't it just another mediocre FPS?

You should absolutely give it a rental. The main draw doesn't end up being the sword fights, as though are fairly bland. The fun is in using the Wiimote as a gun. Getting into gun fights is a blast and almost makes up for the areas where the game is severely lacking. Almost.

Agreed. Actually, I hope the cutscenes are all in-game next time. Aside from the horrible accents that made me want to kick puppies, they were still much better than the moving picture garbage. And I hope they keep the random shoutings and curses in Japanese. That amused me.

( I've a small review over here. )

I played multiplayer Red Steel for the first time 2 days ago, and it might be that Ive never played an FPS on the Wii before, but I found it damn near impossible to control. Things like circle strafing I just couldnt do at all. =\

Red Steel is very different from other FPS titles. Once I threw out my expectations, and started exploring what the game was on its own, I really came to enjoy it. By the end of the game, I was a freaking expert; able to bust into a room, shoot the gun out of a gang leader's hand in a single and cause all his minions to surrender on the spot. You could get a dozen guys to give up with a single well-placed shot, just like that scene in the 5th Element.

With a bit more polish and time, the game could have been great. I have high hopes for the sequel.

Please Red Steel 2, include the button option to skip the cheesy cut scenes everytime we re-start a level.

That title could take on a whole new meaning as an AO title.

It's been reported that Ubisoft confirmed that heavily-rumoured Red Steel 2 is indeed in development for Wii during an event in Cannes, France today.

The sequel is said to include a much-improved sword fighting system, and online multiplayer is also mooted in the report.

Ubisoft has, however, since come out to deny these claims, asserting that there has been no official confirmation of the sequel's development.

We'd be willing to lay money on it though. Like, £1.35 at least. All eyes on E3.
from the link sandman posted above.

no *official* confirmation.... i.e. wait and see.
