Silent Hunter 4 will get a 1.3 patch thanks to fans.

Silent Hunter 4 was release with a myriad of bugs. These bugs were attempted to be fixed via 2 different patches, however the game remained very buggy and unstable. Ubisoft was on the fence about continuing to support SH4, ready to jump ship and leave it to slowly sink beneath the problems. That is until the forum community got involved.

Silent Hunter Patch 1.3 officially announced.

As anyone familiar with the sim community knows, there are some very dedicated and demanding fans in that genre. Bug lists were formed and sent to Ubisoft, yet the official response was that a 1.3 patch was very unlikely. that is when a few dedicated SH4 fans over at the Ubisoft forums began organizing.

They formed polls and the typical forum threads to get Ubisoft's attention. Finally, krazyfrenchman over at the forums organized a 2-day call in to the Ubisoft support lines. Apparently Ubisoft received so many calls that memos were distributed to all the techs and a few days later Ubi announced that they would continue to support SH4 and try to clean up the mess that currently is Silent Hunter 4.

Some good news for the sub sim community and for all gamers who think that publishers never listen to the customer.

Let's face it. SH5 would go down quicker than an Akula at test with an ADCAP through both its hulls if they left SH4 in the state it's in now.

/edit - before anyone starts, I know the max depth of a Mk48 is less than the Akula's test depth.

Agreed, patch 1.3 never should have been a question. Ubi ticked off a lot of simmers. Ubi shouldn't get much praise here for doing the right thing, the community should get the praise for forcing Ubi to acquiesce.

It's strange that SH4 shipped in such funky condition, that much is without question. SH3 was far from bug-free, but it wasn't horribly broken.

As for the 1.3 patch for SH4... actually aside from the fact they had to be cajoled into making it, the length of time between release and this patch isn't so bad... there's been 2 other patches for it so far IIRC.

Hopfully 1.3 really puts the shinola on the game, because it can be SO good. I've been waiting for SH to return to the allied side since the first one came out.

You're old, it happens sometimes. We forgive you.

As for the game - it's incredibly frustrating to have a game that can be enormously improved with a patch, only to have the publisher completely ignore you. Good news for SH fans, but it shouldn't have come to this.

Publishers need to be held accountable for shipping buggy products, and done so in far more serious ways than fan activities like these.

What other industry is allowed to knowingly ship broken product day in and day out?

After 6 months, the last Rayman still doesn't work for a big bunch of buyers, thanks to the stupid copy protection, and Ubi hasn't done a thing despite lots of complaints.

If they don't do their homework with good QA and patches for anything that slips by, they don't deserve our money. We're talking here about a game that doesn't even start!

F UBI!

(for anyone that doesn't believe me, just google jade_enr.exe)

Awesome news, but Ubisoft has gone down the drains over the last year or two. They used to be one of my favorite publishers with some great games, but lately they've been fucking up their products, putting out some questionably "polished" titles, and overall just giving a big "fuck you" to the community.

Ubisoft is now becoming the next EA.

Then it will be no problem when EA acquires Ubisoft... as the rumors have it.

This is sad that they actually had to do that...

I was one of the more vocal "fans" on their forums when SH3 came out, with almost the same exact problems. Their game designers are, quite frankly, idiots. They, for WHATEVER REASON, love static resolutions (IE, you can't change it), no Anti-Aliasing, and a myriad other features that should be STANDARD in games that are released in 2007- hell these things were standard in the 90's. And then when I noted this, they basically told me (and others) to F-off.

They must have their heads in the sand, because I don't think they realize that these kinds of missteps and horrific treatment of their community can ever hurt them. Well I don't have a copy of SH4 on MY shelf, I can tell you that.

Wow, I'm surprised at the number of people here into Silent Hunter.
I love the new one but there's a few show stopping bugs. I'm glad 1.3 is on the way.

Without knowing anything, my guess would be management forced this out to meet deadlines. I can't believe developers actually working on the product didn't see the problems.

The game has so many CTDs it isn't funny. Distance conversions are inacurate, Convoy AI stops working if you kill the "AI leader" ship. I soooo want to play this game because some of my most fond memories as a kid are playing Aces of the Pacific, Run Silent Run Deep, Red October, Attack Sub and many others. It is installed but due to the multiple crashes I cannot bear to play it right now until patched. Also, any game that makes you edit the .ini file to play at 1280x1024 res has serious issues.
