News is beginning to trickle out ahead of Ubisoft's 'UbiDay' including word on a very interesting control scheme for the newest Tom Clancy title - EndWar.
Tom Clancy's EndWar will be playable using only voice commands, Ubisoft revealed in its Ubidays press conference, although there will also be the option to use a joypad. It'll be the first new Tom Clancy game the publisher has created since Splinter Cell, and we were told to "imagine the apocalypse as a techno thriller" to get an idea of what to expect.
Voice commands are a tricky deal. SOCOM implemented them pretty well, but just for issuing squad commands. This sounds like a more integral part of the game to me.
I'm certainly looking forward to seeing more of Endwar... it sounds very interesting.

Would work on the 360 (with headset) or on the PC (with mic). Does the PS3 and Wii have microphone inputs? I think PS3 yes?
You can use a Bluetooth headset with the PS3, but as of now there are no microphones for the Wii, although it would be pretty easy to make one that plugs into the nunchuck port.

I thought the Wiimote had a mic built in. If not, seems like it should have.
Edit: I guess I am thinking about the speaker. Seems like they could have gone without a speaker in the thing and did a mic instead. What exactly is the speaker used for anyway?

EA is shipping a mic accessory for the Wii with Boogie.
This could be pretty awesome for cross platform games.

It honestly is a nice subtle thing that adds to the immersion. The bow going taught in Zelda, the "thwok" of the racket when playing tennis, etc.
So you'll have to practice certain code words, like any other voice recognition deal. "Flank left," "select infantry group 2," "build tanks," stuff like that. It'll be cute, but I'm not confident that it will add to the immersion.

The idea of the speaker in the wiimote was nice, but the implementation sucked. To my ears, it sounds like crap in every game I've played that uses it, from Link's attack to Rayman's squealing pigs. It's really tinny and totally distracting from the normal sound effects throughout the games.
This reminds me of Lifeline for the PS2, in which the voice commands were comically ineffective.
Me: "Open the box."
Character: "Go to the hall?"
Me: "No, go back to the main room."
Character: "Use health item?"
Me: "Goddamn cunt! Go fuck yourself!"
Character: "Drop ammunition?"

I guess your mileage may vary.
I liked the sword and stuff in zelda, but not the voice. The place it's best used is the "click" on the menus and web browser.

if voice commands make real-time strategy games viable on consoles, i'll settle for that.
They've used voice commands before. Rainbow Six on the Xbox had them and they worked without too much problems. If they can build on that, they should be alright.
This is the cover story for the latest EGM. It's a pretty interesting read on how the developer differentiates between a RTS (emphasis on Strategy) vs a Tactical game. Not to mention his desire to make this game like Madden but at war instead of football. If it works it may just successfully create a sub-genre of the RTS.

You should contact Xzibit and have him pimp your wii-mote.
Cany the double A's in the wii-mote power a subwoofer?

there's a big article about this game in the latest EGM, and it looks amazing. Voice command is optional, but apparently it's working really well. They're taking a new approach to RTS where it's structured with a foundation more like Madden than any PC RTS. You select specific battle plans for each situation as if you were selecting football plays. Your perspective is always from the POV of the unit you have selected, as opposed to always floating above everything. Basically it's looking pretty slick, and I'm definitely looking forward to it.
