Xbox 360 Video Marketplace due in Europe this year

GamerZines reports from an interview with Robin Burrowes that Xbox Live Video Marketplace will hit europe this year.

Quote:
In this issue of 360Zine, we've talked exclusively to Robin Burrowes, Microsoft's Xbox Live product manager for the UK and Ireland, about all things Xbox Live, and in particular about the Xbox 360's major dashboard update. He tells us more about the update and how it will enhance the Xbox Live playing experience, as well as talking about other new initiatives like the new handheld input device. That's not all though as he gives Microsoft's strongest commitment yet to getting the Video Marketplace launched in Europe - in 2007! You can read all the interview highlights in the issue and listen to the whole 30 minute interview from within the pages of the magazine itself!
Read more of it here.

I really hope this means that Apple will start offering video content too. Also, I'm hoping for tv shows that don't run on television. Guess I'll have to pick up the new HD

Oh Europe gets it? What about CANADA? Come on Microsoft! I have money. I want to give it to you. What's the point of the Elite in Canada if your not even offering the content?

Don't wait for the translation, answer me now!

Apple might start offering videos, yes. But Apple doesn't offer HD content, even in the US.

It's more of a 'yeah we'd like to do that, maybe this year' rather than 'definitely expect it in 2007'.

Woah?! Canada doesn't have the Video Marketplace? I thought they got things when we did here in the US. It's not like they speak a different language... well unless they are Quebecois..

Yeah man... oddly enough Canada DOESN'T get some of the stuff we get here in the States.

Lord knows I've heard TrackZero complain about it enough times.

Unfortunately odds of getting the Video Marketplace here in Canada are very slim due to the licensing issues. While in the states Microsoft deal directly with the IP holder for the rights to put it on a download service. But in Canada the IP is licensed to Canadian broadcasters who might only have the rights to broadcast it on tv/cable/sat but not to for download. Even if they have streaming rights like Global, they definitely never get resale rights, but they might have certain kinds of exclusive use, who knows these contracts are not public.

So for Microsoft to get the IP on the Canadian marketplace they have to deal with a US IP owner, their Canadian subsidiary, potentially a Canadian licensee, and each show/movie might have varying conditions, and different players.

The Canadian market is just too small for such a herculean effort, thankfully there's BT + TVersity

While the EU probably has similar legal obstacles but the market is an order of magnitude bigger and they are more accustomed to these types of licensing hurdles and probably have more efficient process to deal with licensing issues.

People pay for TV shows all the time on iTunes. And I've picked up a few of my favorites episodes of this and that on Marketplace.

I know people usually pay for shows because you're pretty much guaranteed good quality. For me, it's because I don't have HD Cable or Satellite, so I'll d/l the HD version if it's an episode I dug. Or if it's something I couldn't find on the intarwebs. (i.e. the first season of MTV's "The State")

Thanks for setting the record on that one. Now, can you tell me why I can't get Gametap in Canada? I have money just waiting to be spent. Oh well, if these American companies don't want my money, I guess I'll just spent it at...damn it!!!
