Wall, NJ - Apr 13, 2007 SNK PLAYMORE USA CORPORATION, the U.S. publishing arm of the SNK PLAYMORE CORPORATION, today announced ART OF FIGHTING ANTHOLOGY for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system.
ART OF FIGHTING ANTHOLOGY is a comprehensive collection featuring the entire ART OF FIGHTING trilogy. A total of 33 classic SNK characters are included, each with their own fighting styles and unique moves.
ART OF FIGHTING was SNK’s second fighting-game franchise, set in the same universe as the FATAL FURY franchise, and serving as a prequel to the FATAL FURY saga. The ART OF FIGHTING series improved upon the tried-and-true 2D-fighter combat system with a spirit gauge that gave each player the ability to perform special attacks, as well as an innovative graphical-scaling camera system.
“With both ART OF FIGHTING ANTHOLOGY and FATAL FURY: BATTLE ARCHIVES Volume 1 making their first North American appearances on PlayStation 2 system this will be a memorable summer for SNK fans,” said Ben Herman, president of SNK PLAYMORE USA CORPORATION.
ART OF FIGHTING ANTHOLOGY will be available for PlayStation 2 system in May 2007.
SNK hit it's peak with Garou: Mark of the Wolves a number of years back if you ask me. That game was 2D fighting at it's absolute best and I would not be surprised if it was ever topped.

That's my opinion anyway
edit: helps if I get the name of the game right
I'll second that. Mark of the Wolves and Street Fighter 3 Third Strike were probably the last two great arcade fighters. Nothing against Guilty Gear, but those two are just something else.

I find it kind of weird that they would list this title on their message boards for over a month, then finally issue a press release.
They pretty much waited until the release date of Metal Slug Anthology on the PS2 before issuing a press release saying that it would be...released.
Anyway, I hope this means we'll be seeing their better anthologies soon, or perhaps their recent games given a North American release, like King of Fighters XI, NeoGeo Battle Colliseum, and Samurai Shodown Tenka.
Edit: Hmmm...apparently the press release is actually announcing Fatal Fury: Battle Archives, as I don't believe that was revealed for North American release prior to today.
Well, these collections are nice.
Meanwhile, both NA and UK (especially the UK!) territories are still waiting for The King of Fighters XI on PS2.
Eleven!? That game went to eleven?
The mind boggles.

Art of Fighting is BY FAR the weakest series in the SNK fighting game legacy. A Fatal Fury or, even better, King of Fighters Anthology would be much more mouth watering.

You, sir, have great taste in fighters. The whole 2D fighter market went to shit when everything went the way of button-mashing and 19-hit air combos... but those two you mention (along with KOF 98/2000) are the pinnacle of 2D fighting.

Opinion? This be fact good sir! I'm still pumped for this. I haven't enjoyed any 2D fighting since Street Fighter Alpha 3 on the Street Fighter Anthology Collection. I'd love to tell you I've been enjoying the recent Guilty Gear games, but they have been sucking pretty hard. At least there's Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. I got that gem on the DC!

AoF2 is a nostalgia piece that had serious issues even in its day. And yes, the last great SNK fighting game was Garou. There have been some great titles (Some better than the widely underappreciated SFIII or Mark of the Wolves) since, but far too many 2D fighters have been versus, JoJo or GG style fash fests; where the point of the game is to type into the controls in sequence to produce the most indecipherable shit from the screen at once.
CvS2, however, is spectacular - and it sounds like a lot of folks here gave up on the genre before it. Go hunt down a copy. Still my choice for best ever.
For anyone in this thread that has played Neo Geo Battle Coliseum: Is it worth trying to import?
It's solid and I would recommend importing it if you enjoy SNK fighting games in general. The European version has supposedly faster load times than the Japanese version, and some text has been translated, but some text(the endings) have been entirely omitted. It's also cheaper.
Tangent: You know this is why piracy is bad, if it weren't for all the a-holes copying the MVS cartridges we could have had this as well as KOF11 on the good old Neo. The backgrounds would have taken a hit, but the gameplay would have stayed the same. Not that I'm against technology advancements but the Atomswave format is garbage.
