This was a bit unexpected. There hasn't been an official announcement that I've seen anywhere, but according to IGN, Disgaea Portable will be coming out in the US this August. The game has been out in Japan since November, where it reviewed very well. The game isn't just a port of the PS2 game, it's more of a retelling, almost a prequel, with the story this time focusing more on Etna.

However, even if you've become accustomed to the console version, a number of surprises are waiting for you when you pick up Disgaea PSP. For one thing, players will have to contend with geo cubes, new randomly distributed items that bestow special effects on the battlefield. For another thing, the portable title features a new multiplayer duel system that was specifically developed for North America. That means that you can challenge your friends to see who the better Netherworld strategist is. You'll also have the option to manipulate almost every option for the game, including changing game rules, win/loss conditions and even creating new battle maps to fight over. Finally, along with a large roster of NIS America characters that have been hidden away in the game, players will have the option to purchase and replay their favorite soundtracks, giving them another level of customization during play.
And really, dood, who could resist the pull of demonic undead exploding baseball playing penguins on the go?
My only reaction to this : Hell yes! With Final Fantasy Tactics, Jeanne d'Arc, and now Disgaea, this is really turning out to be a great year for portable strategy games.

Yeah, when they bring God of War to the little fucker, I'm going to have to buy one. I traded my first one in when I bought a 360 for like 200 bucks with the two games I had, so I got a pretty nice deal turning it back in. Looking back, I don't really regret it, but I'm probably not going to buy another PSP until they are a bit cheaper. Lumines still stands as one of my favorite portable games. I was OBSESSED with that shit for awhile. I was thinking about different patterns and strategies in my head when I wasn't playing. Damn I'm weird.
Finally they announced this, I guess all that Pram's wish list stuff really pulls through. Man, I can't wait.

It's the multiplayer mode mainly that has me very, very interested. If they pull that off correctly I have quite a few friends who've been asking for an ass-kicking ever since we all started playing the first Disgaea.
PSP is a must own for me. However, I don't own one because I was waiting on the redesign that's been continually hinted at. So...I'm just waiting I guess.
Unless I can find a firmware compatible version in the meantime that allows me to play PS1 games as well. Every week I'm tempted like no other.

You should try checking eBay. Most of the people selling systems don't list the firmware versions, but I'd bet you could get one that's homebrew compatable pretty easily.

No doubt Sony will announce it at Mini3 or some time around there. I just hope it comes out this year as I really would like one. Sure I haven't seen it, but most Sony redesigns have been good so I have a feeling it'll be worth a wait.
I never played the original. It seemed less serious than your normal game. Looks like I'm gonna have to give it a try now.
Less serious in theme and storyline? Yes, absolutely. Put it this way: the demonic undead exploding baseball playing penguins are for real...and they're on your side.
But as gameplay goes, I've seldom seen a game that rewards sheer obsessiveness as much as Disgaea. I know a guy who bought the game at launch, and is still dicking around with his original save game. It's insane. But in a good way.

I'll probably give in and pick up a PSP sometime late this year... I've wanted one for a while, but I just haven't had a big place for portable gaming in my life, and I already have a DS. But now I've found myself frequently just plopping down into the SUMO and playing the DS while watching TV. I dunno, it's kind of quaint holding the system in my hands.
The biggest detractor of the PSP for me was the price of the games, not just the system itself. But lately I've noticed that DS games are just as fucking expensive (I've seen FFIII going anywhere from $40-$45) so the DS seems to be quickly losing the price advantage that it had.

Don't they have software that can downgrade firmware? I could have sworn they did.
