Of course, there has to be bad news, and it's kind of big: Herman says that Nintendo is not letting publishers add online functionality to games, VC or retail, and probably will continue this restriction throughout 2007.
Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has confirmed that Wii gamers will be able to play games online from the second quarter of 2007. Reggie's pledge came in an interview with SpikeTV's Game Head show (which saw the Ninty president indulging in some bowling - of both the real-life and Wii variety), where he also let slip that more Wii channels were in the works. "The multiplayer is coming. During the Japanese launch, there is Pokémon Battle Revolution, and that's really the first one. There will be titles that we'll be announcing in first quarter 2007, that'll be multiplayer-enabled. So during second quarter 2007, people will be able to have a multiplayer experience on Wii."
So which is it? Do we already have a Japanese online multiplayer game with more very soon to come? Is the SNK head misquoted or full of it? Because it does sound odd that Nintendo would say "no online this year" so shortly after they promised some online games on the way.

Damn, hopefully this isn't completely true. I don't taking gaming very seriously and don't get too worked up about stuff, but Nintendo + anything having to do with online play actually gets me kind of irritated. If Smash Bros launches with no online play, it will be the single greatest disappointment in my video game history.
Unless Smash Bros gets pushed back to next year or something, in which case THAT will be the greatest disappointment.

Well the quote does say that Nintendo isn't letting publishers add online functionality, so perhaps first party games will still have it.
Keep the hope of an online Smash Bros. alive.

All games confirmed for online are first party. From the sounds of it, Nintendo isn't letting third parties online.
i dont know if its a fad but if 1\2 of the people that bought gow played online that would be 1500000 people.
it truely seems online may be the minority of gamers

If you bought a nintendo product for EITHER, third party games OR online functionality, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
I bought this Zune for podcasting
I bought this Blu-Ray for HD-DVD
Sorry to crush your insane hopes and dreams, but third parties get shit on by nintendo, and they never had any plans for online play or functionality being an important part of their product.
Some of you sound like you just saw your girlfriend fucking your best friend, your dog, and your brother, then she stepped on your balls, spit in your face, and keyed your car.
Yea, since it's seemingly an off-hand remark from a non-Nintendo rep that directly contradicts the word from Nintendo, I'm certainly not going to get excited by it.
Oh I'm sure it won't be true... for Japan. I fully sort of expect us to get the shaft though. I really love my Wii but Nintendo gives preferential treatment to Japan unsuprisingly.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Here I was all set with $300 specifically set aside for a Wii and the new Smash Bros. If this turns out to be true I'd have to re-consider.
