BEIJING - An obese 26-year-old man in northeastern China died after a "marathon" online gaming session over the Lunar New Year holiday, state media said on Wednesday.
The 330-pound man from Jinzhou, in Liaoning province, collapsed on Saturday, the last day of the holiday, after spending "almost all" of the seven-day break playing online games, the China Daily said, citing his parents.
Xu Yan, a local teacher, said the "dull life" during the holiday prompted many people to turn to computer games for entertainment.
I don't suppose his weight had anything to do with his death?
News like this really does permeate into the general public. I mentioned to people that=, every year, we have a LAN party. I describe it as a '24-hour gaming binge-no sleep'. Some people really freak out. "You know that can KILL you?!" they ask me.

Look on the bright side...he could have easily been a poor starving chinese guy who died skinny while working his fingers to the bone in a communist labor camp.
Even the chinese can live a decedent, slovenly lifestyle...thats progress my friend!
This article is dumb, it doesn't specify how he died. Maybe he ate nothing but pork rinds while playing online and his heart gave out. Playing games online for 7 days isn't enough to kill someone.
Thousands of Chinese died during The Long March as well. Proof that a slavish devotion to physical fitness may be just as deadly as marathon gaming sessions! At least if you're MSNBC.

This dude was amazing, and should be an inspiration for his people. Not only was he obese (in fucking CHINA); but he was able to afford being an MMO player who could play for a week without ever getting up off his fat ass. If that doesn't inspire nationalism, I don't know what will.

330lbs? Did they find Uncle Ben himself in this guys stomach? Speaking of China and the net, here's how they treat people like that over there. http://tinyurl.com/yo8g4j Looks like our 300lb gamer woulda been dead either way, at least he took the fun way out.
I don't suppose his weight had anything to do with his death?
Yes, I'm sure his weight DID contribute to his death, but it wasn't likely the most significant factor. The cause was probably more closely related to sleep deprivation (which can lead to many physiological complications) and, as someone else noted, a strong chance of a circulatory issue arising, such as a blood clot.
I'm not blaming the game for his death, but rather addictive behavior. As others have stated, he could have died while being obsessed with most any other activity. The only logical question that follows as it relates to gaming is, do games (MMOs in particular) have addictive qualities which make them more of a risk than other activities? I don't think legal action is required, but let's not delude ourselves... I spent enough hours slumped over my computer grinding Mithril in Tanaris to know how easy it is to get obsessed (completely my own fault). But I think the point at which I realized how bad it had gotten was when I was watching TV and saw someone slumped over a slot machine popping quarters and thinking, "Gee... that's probably about how I look playing WoW." =)
