GamesIndustry.biz has the scoop on a recently announced Blu-Ray player from Sony that will retail for $599.
Quote:
The BDP-S300 will go on sale early this summer and is priced the same as the recently released PlayStation 3. The previous model BDP-S1 currently retails for US $999.
The BDP-S300 is around the size of a standard DVD player and has all the features of the US $999 model, with the added benefit of being able to play CDs.
The really significant thing about this is most likely you'll be able to find this for close to the price of the low end PS3 on a lot of online retailers. This also really makes the Blu-Ray player competitive with the HD-DVD players out there.
It makes sense to do this from a Blu-Ray perspective. There are plenty of movie buffs who won't be interested in buying a PS3 so if Blu-Ray is to suceed there needs to be an attractively priced Blu-Ray player on the market.

You can easily find Toshiba A2 HD-Dvd players online for around $360 (compared to $499 retail). The older model A1 can be found for about $250 but they're the old model are probably not going to be made anymore. Still Sony should be applauded for closing the price gap.
Side note: I knew HD-DVDs were NOT region encoded but it didn't occur to me that DVDs would be published in other countries by different companies so BR only movies in the US can be found on the HD-DVD format in other countries and they play in English. This "format" war is ridiculous.
If $599 is "cheap", why is everyone complaining about the price of the PS3?
Because there are three camps here:
People who want a Blu-Ray player but not a games machine
People who want to play games and watch Blu-Ray movies
People who just want to play games
Sony are catering to the first two, but not the third, and it's primarily people in the third camp who complain about the price of the PS3 (which is perfectly justified). The complication is that Sony say that you need Blu-Ray for this generation of games, but that's another argument...

I don't get it... So, now, I can pay the same price for a blu-ray player, but without the added functionality of playing games. Who does that appeal to? What am I missing?
Yet still, even the biggest PS3 hater will admit that the ability to play PS3 games is worth the $0 on top of that.
That's if you assume they allready have a 1080p television and gotta "have it now".
Any other sane person would avoid the PS3 untill stand alone blue ray players take a massive price drop like DvDs did.

Unless this player is somehow better at playing movies then the PS3 I have no idea why someone would get this over the PS3. Even if you have no interest in games you might as well get a PS3 anyways incase you have company over who wants to bring their games with them, or relatives, or any number of other reasons why you might as well take the more or less FREE added features of a PS3 over this player.
reallyz?!
xbox 360 core-$299
component or vga cables-$40
hd-dvd add on-$199
Around $540
I dont care about buying used systems or getting a super cool circuit city discount. Retail vs retail price.
???
First you mentioned the cheapest HD-DVD player being a Toshiba model for $400, then schnoogs said he got his for $300, and then you went onto a cost calculation for what wasn't the cheapest HD-DVD player...am I missing something?
This is a post about a new BR player and we start talking about 360 and HD-DVD. Nice. I wondered why people say this sight is skewed toward MS.
In all honesty it would be dumb to buy this player. Why not get a PS3 gaming machine for a $0 dollar increase? Even if all you do is play BR movies, you at least have the option to download music, movies and play games. Unless the PS3 is a poor BR player, it is a no brainer for most.
