There's been some rumbling lately as the 10th anniverary of Final Fantasy VII approaches that we could see a remake of the classic updated for undisclosed next-gen platforms. The rumor has the game being created in the Unreal 3 engine to allow for maximum portability between platforms. This isn't the first time this rumor popped up, at E3 this past year Sony demo'd a cutscene of FFVII running on the PS3 being rendered in real time.
The 10th anniversary is this Wednesday, January 31st. So keep your eyes peeled.
Jeez....why the hell is this news. You're only fake journalists for christs sake! Pretenders to the throne of the exalted editors of IGN and Gamespot.

I think we need to make bap an alias to post rumors under.
This would be very cool if it were to happen and not that I don't trust you bap(I do) but I seem to remember Square saying at E3 that they are not working on and will not do a FFVII remake. of course a lot of things have changed since that E3.
Alls I know is if MS gets Capcom and the 360 gets a remake of FFVII I will be one giddy gamer.
Again? I can't think of another rumor in the entirety of gaming I'm more sick of hearing.
DNF?

Yeah, honestly, from a business position alone, I don't see a downside in doing a FFVII remake. I mean, maybe someone can come up with a reason why its a false assumption, but I would think that a remake would sell incredibly well all over the world.
I still don't believe it will happen, but I guess I'm still surprised no one's tried to tap that source of income yet.

They're never going to do one. Sqaure just brings out the rumor and some random pre-rendered video whenever Sony has a new console to sell. When the PS4 hits in 4 years or whatever, there'll likely be another pre-rendered video of FFVII, which Square will at first stay silent about, then deny that it's from a remake.
They've been doing this kinda crap for every Sony launch, and it's a card Sony loves to play, so I suspect a remake will never happen simply because it would kill their ability to use the ploy again.
And why not? The fanboys lap this shit up every time. It's great publicity for both Square and Sony.

I don't know, I don't see how the consoles sold from such a ploy would outweigh the gains from actually selling a remake.
Never played the game. Is it really significant enough to matter today? I mean, I know it's legendary to otaku, but to joe madden?
Are you kidding me?
From the Wiki:
Final Fantasy VII was both a critical and commercial success, and set several sales records. Within three days of its January 1997 release in Japan, the game had sold 2.3 million copies.[61] This popularity inspired thousands of retailers in North America to break street dates in September to meet public demand for the title.[85] In the game's debut weekend in North America, it sold 330,000 copies,[86] and had reached sales of 500,000 units in less than three weeks.[87] The momentum built in the game's opening weeks continued for several months; Sony announced that the game had sold one million copies on the continent by early December,[88] prompting one business analyst to comment that "Sony redefined the role-playing game (RPG) category and expanded the conventional audience with the launch of Final Fantasy VII".[88]
