Didn't think we'd see the day for a while, but it looks like with the shift of consumers from PS2 to PS3 and the release of the biggest title in MS's Japanese library yet the unthinkable has happened, with the Xbox 360 shifting a whopping 5,000 more units than the PS2 in Japan.
DS Lite 309,603
Wii 85,439
PlayStation3 50,171
Xbox 360 35,343
PlayStation2 30,460
PSP 28,930
Still being pummeled by the PS3, and nothing is standing up to the DS Lite, but a small victory for Microsoft.
Let's see how folks react to Lost Planet next week.
News stories based on weekly sales data need to stop. One week fluctuations in sales rarely you give a good perspective on the big picture. Monthly sales data are much more informative.
Lost Planet got some good Famitsu reviews (all 9s, I think), so that could help, too. Lost Odyssey definitely will. If I were in MS' shoes, I would've fronted the bill for an FF12 port a year ago, so it could've launched simultaneously on both in all territories... but that's me.
Is it really huge news that the 360 is outselling the PS2 in Japan by less than 5,000 units? I mean the PS2 has been out for 7 years in Japan, so it's not like it's having any trouble.
I'm not flaming the 360 at all, I'm just saying it's silly to do this every week and compare week to week and to compare 360 to PS2. I'd rather the OP have compared PS3 to 360, which is a better comparison. The 360 almost outsold the PS3 which is HUGE considering this is Sony's turf and it is brand new, so it should be selling like crazy.
The PS3 is unavailable, which might account for that. Or does.
I'm sick of Sony. My Xbox 360 is the only next gen I'll need, and if Nintendo would drop this home-console nonsense and just jump on board with MS to make the next NDS play nice with the 360, then I think everyone would be happy.

Everyone's got their idea of a perfect world...
I'd like to see Nintendo buy Capcom, including those cats who formed Clover.

Yes it's big news considering that it's the first time 360 sales have surpassed PS2 sales in Japan.
For a bit of truth in advertising you should change your tagline to The Sony Shill.
After reading this thread and @ first thinking of quoting and then re quoting and then seeing BAP call the bs Im going to say, as a competitive gamer, if I was at that spot on the ladder with this kind of momentum Id look at this as a very positive thing.
The 360 just needs to get in circulation in Japan and then it can start overcoming it's negative brand recognition. The system really does have a lot to offer in the way of games, but the Japanese probably never see the games except in store kiosks.
Looking at those numbers I think this news should be about the Wii. It owned both new gen consoles. It's fine and all that the 360 outsold a 7 year old console but that was bound to happen eventually. The Wii also outsold the PS2.

I'd prefer seeing Microsoft buy Clover and a few other Capcom studios. As MS would probably let them do their own thing and try and create a franchise. Nintendo would just have Clover make Okami 2 staring Star Fox or something.
What suprises me about those sales numbers is that there are 50,000+ PS3s for Sony to sell in that week.
