Last night Sony aired the one of their first Playstation 3 commercials on National Television. Did they choose one of their awesome science styleAds? Nope..instead they showed an ad that shows a PS3 making a baby cry.
Not only is that creepy, it makes no sense. I like the other ads much better.

Fucking creepy...I guess it beats the talking squirrel PSP ads.

I think this is a punch at Nintendo with kiddy styled games?
I think it's more a ham-fisted attempt to continue the "3rd Place" style ads directed by David Lynch from way back when. The problem was that he at least had style, whereas the shitty knock-offs that came much later seemed closer to a "spooky" Coal Chamber music video.
Anyone remember Coal Chamber? God, they were shit.

Er, what? Is there some cultural reference to damaging the psyches of infants, insane children or creepy dolls that somehow applies to the PS3 that I'm not understanding? I feel as if there's some vital clue I'm missing here... Either that or I just need somebody to say, "Yes, Sony is officially bonkers."
That was lame. And the Chucky-style baby was creepy.

Wow.. Just... What the fu.... Wow.... I ... I don't even know what to say about this one.... What the hell... That has to be the most retarded commercial of anything I've ever seen...
And whatever that baby has to do with anything... And that noise it makes in the beginning... This was so random, I don't know what they were trying to do... Sell me a PS3 or keep far away from it... This is such terrible advertising...
Think they are avoiding gameplay footage because the comparison to the 360's gameplay footage is so similar? Maybe it is because they don't have an iconic killer-app yet?

Yeah, I hadn't thought of Lynch's adverts. But still, wouldn't you think Sony would target a slightly broader audience with their commercials? I think most people will see this add and think, "Wait... what the hell?"
Yeah, Sony, a short clip of a freakish crying doll with fiery explosions reflecting in his eyes set to creepy laughter is going to make me buy all kinds of PS3s...

I'm not seeing any 360 commercials with gameplay footage either, at least not from Microsoft. Their launch commercials were just as bad, and the commercials they're airing now are about as uninformative as commercials get. Someone needs to get a better marketing firm for both Sony and Microsoft for X-Mas.

I think the ad worked fine since we're even discussing it here.
You've a point, Cactus. But I doubt Sony pumped out the ad thinking, "I bet this'll get everybody chatting around the water cooler or the niche gaming enthusiast forums."

I disagree. I think that is exactly what they are trying to do, get people to talk about their product.
Something that I think people fail to realize is that Sony (and MS last year) is in a strange position from a marketing standpoint this fall. In one sense, they need to get the word out that they're releasing a new console and create interest, but on the other hand, they know that they'll be selling out regardless due to lack of stock this fall. Really, the only thing they need to do right now is generate conversation and interest in the system, and I think this ad does the job.
