Star Citizen funding hits $18 Million- adds FPS-mode?

Chris Roberts' Star Citizen is one of the most successful crowd-funded games ever, hitting the $18 million mark just one week after topping $17 million.

Quote:
Greetings Citizens,

Thanks to your incredible support, we have reached $18 million less than a week after hitting $17 million!

These numbers are amazing, and the credit goes entirely to the community that has come together to make Star Citizen happen. The best news in all of this is that the Hangar Module has inspired thousands of new fans to join the effort. The bigger our community, the better the game experience will be and greater chance we will have of making Star Citizen a game that continues for many years.
Chris goes on to say the the next major milestone in the crowfunding will be the $20 million mark, in which his team will add ground-based FPS mode, and it doesn't stop there.

If you're not backing this your missing out on a major development in PC gaming.

One of the few games I was on the fence about because he didn't open on Kickstarter. As soon as he did I backed it. Glad I did!

Now if I just had the time to read the weekly updates! They are massive and one of the best outreaches from a crowd-funded project ever. Keep it up guys!

Yeah, I'll jump onboard when Squadron 42 is out. I love the talk for this game, but I don't like investing in Kickstarters that are a long way out.

I'm the guy who does Steam Early Access easily, but is hard to get to support a Kickstarter.

It already is backed and then some. I'll purchase a retail release to help support future projects.

I'm in the same boat as bean19, support KSP with an alpha game to play a year ago? awesome, throw money at some kickstarter that doesn't have any tangible thing I can mess with? I'll wait till you're further developed and I get something tangible for my money now.

Just feel no need to help out at this point. I can wait and buy retail when it is actually here and can decide if it is any good. "ZOMG, it's Chris Roberts, he can't go wrong!" Neither could Peter Molyneux, or Lord British or a whole heap of other amazing developers.

Here's an "advertisement" for the 300i ship released awhile back.

People keep saying "Kickstarter". I don't see a link to a Kickstarter page anywhere. How am I missing that? (I have found the funding page off their site and all the various "Packages" that can be purchased, but not any links to a "Kickstarter" page.)

While this certainly looks cool I'm hesitant because of the possibility they may be trying to do too much. Hopefully it all comes together nicely.

I'll try to keep you updated on it. So far it's looking like a tight group of devs who answer the community's call.

It's crazy how much money this project has made. All those Wing Commander, Freespace and X-Wing fans must have a lot of cash and faith.

Just lost a massive post I was going to make about this due to either timeout or EA's server crapping out, so here's my second try.

There are a number of reasons other developers should look to this campaign for lessons. Constant content updates (with community interaction), a tally on their main site that shows in near real-time how much has been pledged even after the campaign, to keep triggering that math portion of backers brains, and new tiers and deals almost constantly as development allows.

Together with community updates that are a healthy mix of informative and community-building (with excitement over fan interaction, gifts, pledges etc), new stretch goals to keep people interested, and lots and lots of transparency when it comes to the development of the game, I shouldn't have been surprised when I saw this get past 10 mil even after the main campaign was over. Subscriptions for special informative content also helps.

It is also a good thing that space junkies have lots of money to throw around if you offer them shiny spaceship gifts. The hangar module was a great boost for income when people finally got to go inside and check out what they would be flying. Not to mention they got a lot of bugs ironed out that way before alphas came along.

They're going for 21 mil as a goal that lets them make the game without venture capital of any sort. I'm guessing future funds will end up polishing already existing features. They'll most likely reach this level, and be able to keep almost all the money they make.

Oh, and since the campaign ended I've more than doubled my pledge, once my income started up again.

The best outcome would be a hybrid of Privateer and X-Wing Alliance with the storyline of Freespace 2. Personally, I hope it happens.
