Slitherine Cuts Deal to Make Warhammer 40,000 Strategy Game

Slitherine has announced it has inked a deal with Games Workshop to produce a Warhammer 40,000 based strategy game.

Quote:
Slitherine (www.slitherine.com) and Games Workshop (www.games-workshop.com), two giants in their respective specialist markets, have signed a deal to produce a strategy video game set in the popular Warhammer® 40,000® universe.

"This deal represents yet another testament to our continuous aim to reach new audiences, without losing sight of who we are and what we do best", said JD McNeil, Chairman of the Slitherine Group. "It's all about creating strategy games that are targeted to a particular audience and addressing a very specific need in the market. The Warhammer 40,000 setting is a perfect fit for the style of strategy games that we make and will be very popular with fantasy and science fiction fans alike. Joining forces with Games Workshop will allow us to bring an wonderfully deep and appropriate IP to the Turn Based Strategy genre”.

Details of the deal including the content and features of the game have not yet been announced, but development is already underway on multiple platforms, involving the best talents in design and development available to the Slitherine Group.

Jon Gillard, Head of Licensing at Games Workshop said: “Slitherine are clearly established and successful masters of their genre of games, and there are many fans of their work here at GW. It’s a pleasure to work with such like minded individuals who share our passion for strategy games of all types”.

Are these the same guys who wrote the "battle simulation" program for Deadliest Warrior?

Haha.

Awesome, I used to work with someone who works at Slitherine.

I think I'll be interrogating someone first thing tomorrow morning!

I saw Turn Based and lost all interest. And I am someone who bought every DOW game, , Add-On, and a crapton of DLC. They should probably re-think that.

How is Slitherine a giant in the industry? I don't recognize the developer or any of their games.

And turn based just... isn't great.

Warhammer 40k deserves better than this.

I wouldn't say giant in the industry but, giant in the genre - that being turn based strategy games. I've beta'd several games from them and they are OK - if you like turn based strategy.

Kinda surprised to hear most folks here DONT want a turn based W40k game.

Y'all know that the miniatures game isn't in real time right? ' )

I wish someone WOULD make a turn-based W40k game like the real deal.

Of course then it's nothing but problems since Games Workshop takes forever to deal with balance and issue codex updates. Not to mention the cost increase of the models now that they are made with resin...

Microtransaction heaven for them IMO.

First Space Hulk and now this, maybe Games Workshop is getting desperate for video game sales after the cancellation of Dark Millennium and whatever's going on with DoW 3.

Games Workshop ONLY gives license to TERRIBLE developers. See everything until DoW (and I attribute this to sheer luck of volume). I have never seen nor heard a single GW rep who knows anything about game design, game theory, or the computer game industry. This is either a continuation of their policy of "screw your own fanbase to drive minature sales" or they are actually ignorant.

GW: Nobody will play this shit, they will look into the extravagant $$$ miniatures!

Well I for one am excited by the prospect of another turn based WH40K game. I mean I love DOW and DOW2, but I also remember how amazing Chaos Gate was and would love another game like that too.

I really LOVED the DOW games, but they really weren't 40K games. As rubbishfoo said, 40K is turn based, and 40K has many, many, problems but being turn based is not one of them.

I'm pretty sure I remember people on this very board back in the day complaining that DOW was going to be a RTS and "not true to the game." Then they complained that it was too much like Starcraft. Then they cried when DOW2 wasn't enough like Starcraft. Etc.

I actually kind of liked "Battle Academy." I wonder how many people here who are bemoaning Slitherine have actually played a turn based war game at all? Do you have an example of a good war game (besides the mass marketed Civilization and X-Com?)

Hey... Final Liberation back in the late 90s was a decent game... turn based too! Really enjoyed playing the crap out of it

Same here. The masses have been clamoring for a turn-based 40K for a while now, so I'm not sure where this new attitude is coming from.

Love my Dawn of War games, but I'm equally excited to see a turn based game on the way. I don't think I've played a 40K turn based video games since Final Liberation.

I'm all for a turn based WH40K but I really hope the studio isn't trash. Warhammer is one of the few IPs I'm willing to gamble with bad games on.
