Director J.J. Abrams says that he's been in talks with Valve to create movies based on Portal and Half-Life.
Quote:
"It's as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets," Abrams said of the just-announced plans to develop movies based on Portal and Half-Life. "Which is that we are really talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas."
"And both a Portal and Half-Life movie are things I want to see," Abrams said. "We're also aware of the cautionary tales of movies that became games and vice versa. Our goal here to is to treat the world Valve has created in both these properties like anyone would a book or some great story that comes from a pitch or original script — just to treat it with the respect they treat their games and their players with."
What the fuck for? These games were never meant to have an ending.
Some of the best movies out there don't have an ending. The Thing is a perfect example. And I prefer endings like that more than the typical generic ending you get with most movies today.
In all honesty, I don't see Half-Life and Portal being anywhere near becoming an all-time great theater experience, but if written well I am sure they would be fun shows to watch. The subject matter is great stuff.
If he pulls these off, he could become a King of Nerds.
Why?
I don't understand why gaming is still in this place where people feel like they the industry needs the validation of having a "movie" to make it mean it "has arrived".
What in the world can a Half Life movie do that a Half Life game can't do? If the answer is "well you don't have to play it, you can just sit and watch it" then something is really wrong somewhere.

Or a horrible ending that kills the series entirely...You have a point.

Lol! That is true too. All be it, terrible endings are far more common and you would think they would have learned what works and what doesn't by now...
I think Portal would be a good idea, Most portal ideas involve time or other dimensions. A portal that is used as a tool/weaponwithin our own time and confines would a cool movie if done right.
Portal No. Half-Life?..................maybe
I'd love it like that Vantage Point movie w/ 5 different view points all teh same shit happening. Gordon, Barry, Alexi, ...... ok 3 points
