About to board a plane to drive across the states. Anyone got any good suggestions for prepaid mobile phone/internet over there? Will need it for just over a month but would be awfully handy to look things up on the go and make calls send messages etc.
I just got back from NY, and did the pre-paid thing. I paid $25 for 2 gigs of data, and $15 for calls (the calls worked a little strange, I paid $2 for the first call, but every call for the rest of the day was free, so basically unlimited calls for $2 a day).
This was with AT&T -- I *really* doubt this is the best deal, but I didn't research it, just arrived and found a phone store that did pre-paid (Sprint doesn't do pre-paid?). At least in NY, AT&T's 3G is pretty slow, even compared with my crappy Optus plan.
The AT&T people were very helpful, and even tested that my iPhone was unlocked before charging me anything
I'd suggest getting one of those Garmin Nuvi things for driving cross country. That will save you at least three speeding tickets! Not to mention being unpossible to get lost But don't trust it completely for route. It can also pop up instant like food and sleep spots.
Straight Talk is great so far. 45$ for umlimited minutes, text, and 2GB data. I buy the cards at Walmart with cash so they have no credit card information on file for me, and even the name and address are impossible for them to confirm, so you are free to put in whatever you want. You choose between an ATT or TMobile compatible SIM card, so this assumes you already have a GSM compatible phone that you can plug a SIM into.
Rocked up into bestbuy and got talked into some Net10 deal. $50 with unlimited talk, text and data... unbeknown to me they prevent you from being able to tether your iphone via the sim it appears *sigh*. This is what i get for not doing more research before hopping onto the plane. Oh well live and learn i guess
