Time Magazine has released its list of the 100 best games of all time, ranked by decade; in short it's their enumeration of the gaming canon, that all future students of Gameology will have to beat and critique in order to earn a degree in Game Design--much as all english-lit students read and critique classic novels from centuries past to earn their degrees.

It’s hard to imagine a world without video games. For some, they’re a simple diversion — a way to pass time. For others, they’re a portal to strange and wonderful alternate universes. For everyone, whether you’re into video games or not, they’re an integrally important part of our culture.
From Adventure to Zork, here are our picks for the All-TIME 100 greatest video games.
I don't see Baldur's Gate II, Fallout, Half-Life or Battlefield 1942 on that list...and no Dark Souls or The Witcher 2 but they list Mass Effect 3? I would also put Duke Nukem 3D in the 90's section since it had the biggest influence on future FPS games in terms of a voiced protagonist and environment interaction.
I saw this a few weeks ago, and declined to submit it. Too many glaring omissions (Half Life) and too many ridiculous inclusions (Hunt the Woompus, Angry Birds) to give it any more eyes. I will say this, however, they tried

I know, I woulda put ME2 myself. Also, Demon's Souls -is- on there, arguably more impactful than Dark Souls. Half Life 2 is on there too.

Half Life 2 > Half Life, imo.
Hunt the Wumpus is probably before our time, doesn't mean it doesn't have adherents.
Angry Birds made a huge impact, I think it's justified.
They have oblivion on that list, but no morrowind...I don't know a single gamer that thinks oblivion is beter than morrowind...Mainly because it just isn't. I also have to agree with randir14 on the other games missing from this list.

Clearly any such list must make compromises. Morrowind may be superior for us hardcore, but I think Oblivion made a bigger market impact.

while that may be true, the list is called All-TIME 100 greatest video games, not 100 most influential games. That being the case I just can't agree with it choosing oblivion over morrowind, nor the omissions of some other great games like some of the ones mentioned in this thread.

You're entitled to your own opinion, even if it's wrong

Besides too much deference to importance over greatness, there are titles on the list that are just plain wrong. Silent Hill? Rez? Animal Crossing? CAVE STORY!? These are inexcusable spot fillers for a list that fails to contain Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Not sure I'd mention any of those as fillers, especially with stuff like Solitaire or like 'Desktop Tower Defense', whatever that is. Not sure how I'd rate Animal Crossing or Cave Story in particular, though I do know both series have huge followings, but Silent Hill and Rez are both heavy hitters on the list. Silent Hill may have fallen from grace, but no doubt in regards to the significance to the first few titles. Silent Hill 2 is still one of the best horror games I've ever played.
Also looks like they were trying to only list a single title per IP, likely to fit more IP's on the list overall. Would have to wager OoT against the original Legend of Zelda title for that slot. Much as I like Ocarina, not sure I'd name it between the two.
heh I tried to go back and play that a couple years back, when they made it free. The way they did the first person perspective gives me severe motion sickness. Could barely get out of the starter area without succumbing to nausea.
No such list should ever lack the original Half-Life, which not only raised the bar for shooters for the first time since Doom (and arguably, it hasn't been raised since), but serves a model for precisely what narrative gaming is suppose to be. It is little less than the Citizen Kane of gaming. Half-Life 2, which was included, is a quality title, that continues the trend established by the first game, but it is by no means the revolution that Half-Life 1 is.
