'Xbox TV' Device Coming in 2013?

The Verge is reporting that Microsoft plans to release a set-top box designed to compete with the likes of Apple TV in 2013. According to the report, the Xbox branded device will support casual games and streaming.

Quote:
Microsoft is building an Xbox set-top box. Multiple sources familiar with Redmond's plans have confirmed to The Verge that the company plans to introduce a low-cost alternative to its Xbox console, designed to provide access to core entertainment services. The move will allow Microsoft to further increase its presence in the living room, providing consumers with a choice between a set-top box or a full next-generation Xbox console.

We're told that the set-top box is part of a two-SKU strategy for Microsoft's next-generation of Xbox hardware that will be unveiled in 2013, with a release date ahead of the holiday shopping season. The device will run on the core components of Windows 8 and support casual gaming titles rather than full Xbox games typically found on a dedicated console. Although hardware specifications aren't fully locked down, we understand Microsoft will use a chipset to enable an "always on" device that boots quickly and resumes to provide near-instant access to TV and entertainment services.

It won't be for us. . . and I wonder if there is a market for this. My Mom would love to be able to stream Netflix in her living room, but she doesn't want to purchase a game console.

Look at the Roku. My parents love it and have it for the same reason: Netflix sans console.

Brilliant idea I think. The xbox brand would fit really nicely into a 2 system approach. A cheaper TV driving device basically, and a console.

People are going to be looking more and more for these kinds of devices to watch media on. The cheaper the better. I think big cable companies are slowly on their way out. Its going to take awhile, but things are happening.

If google makes it into the ISP / Telecoms biz, its going to decimate its competition all across North America.

The next big thing for your TV next to consoles is going to be devices to get stuff to play. Apple TV and Android powered stuff kind of have some foot hold here, but I imagine an "Xbox TV" is going have a lot of traction.

If anything it helps bridge the gap between what they are trying to with Windows 8 and the rest of reality a bit.

Step 3 in MS trying to make itself an advert empire like Google.

But what makes it Xbox? Anything today can play movies or stream tv. What makes it gaming-related? Is this a replacement for Media Center?

Ever since I discovered windows media center, my 360s are already my set-top boxes that are sometimes used to play casual games.

If the new devices can act as 1080p media center extenders for $100 or less I'll buy them when my 360s die. Unless they require a gold subscription. In that case they can fuck right off.

Outside of people who got one free at the Google conference and a few that ordered one, it got pulled:

I honestly thought it was a bit over-priced for what it offered.

Goddamit, I never thought I'd say this, but I think I'd rather use Linux than Windows 8. And I freaking HATE Linux.

I dont think Windows 8 is that bad. Takes a few hours to get used to it though. After using it for a few days I know like it better than Windows 7. There are keyboard shortcuts for pretty much everything.

If that box can play bluray isos in 3d with HD sound then I might be interrested. Otherwise not.

ok guys. picture this.

$99
XBox360 mini, very quiet, small like a wii.
Comes with a XBox controller and an XBox Remote. Also works fine with smartglass controller apps.
No DVD drive. Download/streaming only. Plays all XBLA, XBLIG, XBM games just like a 360. Basically exactly and only a 360 but no optical disk.
120gig drive? - USB flash memory stick can be used as extra memory if desired (just like currently)
Supports Kinect as an add-on purchase

There has to be a market for that.

and of course it won't play .mkv's I'm sure. I know HTPC's are more pricey but again, there's no issues with playing any sort of files. XBMC is just fantastic as everyone knows.

I'd rather buy a ZOTAC box and stick it behind the TV instead of this.

Not only Netflix but just about every other digital streaming content, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, etc. Netflix alone is worth a Roku but you can get channels for soooo many other things its easily worth the purchase. I love my Roku, use it all the time.

Apple TV, been there done it. I don't see what MS thinks it's bringing to the table. None of these devices play the video formats I watch so, they're useless to me. I have a WDTV box that plays nearly every format, supports streaming sites and distributes video throughout the house over the WIFI networks.

If MS brought something like that to the table with better performance than the WD, I'd buy it. Otherwise not.

Absense of any physical media drive (DVD/BR-ROM) is a deal breaker for a large number of people.
