I never played it, myself. The metacritic reviews seem like like it, or hate the controls. I remember loving the atmosphere of the original Ecoo, but finding it ridiculously difficult (Stupid fish, needs to breath air--ridiculous!) and somewhat aimless.
Never liked the Ecco games myself. But they had sick ass soundtracks I must admit.
The music, the visuals and the way they come together to generate a true, underwater experience is really unparalleled. The original, 16-bit (Even better, the Sega-CD version) Ecco blows Aquanaut's Holiday out of the water.
Yes, I just referenced an extremely obscure PSX game to make that one bad pun.
Meh. I played one of these but it wasn't terribly memorable.
I want a new E.V.O.

So long as they don't make Ecco a first person shooter, I think you're point might not hold up.
That being said, I hope they don't make Ecco a first person shooter...
Lol
But the analogy holds, because you know the new Ecco isn't going to be a 2D sidescroller. Which means, yet again, they're gonna try to translate 2D gameplay into 3D gameplay. And probably muck it all up in the process.
I finally played through EVO recently after a few fitful starts in the past. Game has a lot of interesting ideas, but the execution was only okay. It would've matured with a new entry.
The whole purchasing of upgrades as evolution idea could be quite interesting in a new entry. But really they just dialed it in. The level design was mediocre at best, and the music was often recycled from Final Fantasy :P
I must have missed the point of the first one. I never thought it was all that great, but it was one of the first games I ever played while young, and I didn't get far into it.
