Penny Arcade Sells Out

Gabe & Tycho from Penny Arcade are hosting a Kickstarter to run their page ad free for one year.

It is a great idea, but they want $1 Million to run the entire page ad free for a year. That is a huge goal to try to hit.

I like PA ads, usually good stuff in the sidebar. Hell most of their current ones are for their own card game.

Iffy job on trying to make their free money-grab KS somehow a noble act for their fans. I'm glad they at least will be giving the donators some sort of return on their investment with this KS, the whole 'Donation Stretchgoals' thing was a good touch.

Like Meusli I wanna see how loyal the Penny Fans are gonna be with this...

I love the PA guys, but they sure picked a bad time in our ecconomy to do this. Even though I don't mind the ads, I would have chipped in a few bucks if finances weren't what they were.

And even then, I'd still rather point my cash toward OUYA.

If fans donate to Penny Arcade's kickstarter, that's just going to mean fewer people will have money to donate to Child's Play.

Good...I'm sick of them being owned by the publishers and producers. Oh wait, we're talking about PA here? I thought their ads were approved by them and were truly consumer oriented compared to most.

How about a KickStarter to never hear a mention of Lookouts again? I mean, they would still mention it, because they like it despite general disdain from their fandom, but at least it might generate some cash.

It's a boatload of cash. And after the fans give them the $1 Million, they still get to profit off prints, shirts, toys, etc.

It's exactly like having your cake and getting to eat it too.

When ever I hear mention of Kickstart I get the image of a drunken dwarf with the slogan 'I spent my Kickstart money on Ale and Whores'.

I can't say I really understand this at all. If hosting costs go up, the readerbase increases or if they want to expand somehow they'll just be forced to bring back the ads again - or suffer financially. Whats so bad about advertising anyway? Without advertising I wouldn't get to waste Sundays watching bikes and cars driving around in circles and people throwing balls around - I love that crap.

I don't get why people would pay for this, seeing as they only have the one tiny banner ad and mostly just ads/links to their own stuff. I've been on the internet a while now, and if your brain hasn't been wired to ignore ads placed as unobtrusively and as un-noticeably as theirs, there is something wrong with you.

I don't even have ad-block and my initial reaction was "what ads...aren't those all just banners to their own projects/sites? when did they put ad's back on there?". Hell, I don't even notice ads on EvAv.
