Official GDC 2012 extended Insider's Look announce trailer for SimCity by EA Maxis. SimCity is an online city building simulation game from Maxis Studios. It is the quiessential city builder franchise that started a genre.
SimCity is back and bigger than ever with a new 3D world to create and control and multi-player to play with your friends for the first time.
I am really excited about this game. However I am quite disappointed that EA is going to force an Origin internet connection be active to play the single-player game. WTF! GRRRR. I purposely avoided BF3 over this shit, but I dunno if I can hold out if Maxis actually delivers a good Simcity after almost a decade. I might have to break down and put stupid Origin on my machine.
Until they drop the always on I don't see this doing well. Diablo gets away with it because its Diablo and it still can't handle it. I don't imagine people who play SimCity want other players influencing their work, I certainly don't.
And honestly a stand needs to be made anyway since it seems like publishers are now trying to move on from just cutting out parts of the game to sell separately and trying to make everyone always-on even when it doesn't need to be. Every time theyhave to pathetically explain why there is no offline option I feel somewhat sorry for the mook forced to defend it.
Welcome to the post Diablo 3 world, more and more games will go this route, things will be cracked where they can be, while just disabling server-connection only features, like the ARK ship storage in Anno 2070.
However, if this game ends up being the SimCity game we've been craving since SimCity 4, I'll have to buy it brick and mortar and then activate it on Origin anyway. For some reason I just don't want to give Origin my payment information :P
^Amen. I am also appalled by the $60 and $80 price tags for this game Emab posted. I guess I will wait until it goes on sale. Or I could just TPB it. Sad that it is now ridiculously expensive and restrictive to actually support the developers I like.
Well damn. I was really, and I mean REALLY, excited for this game. But always online DRM is just something I cannot look over. Sorry Maxis, but I'll have to pass.
