Epic Games Thinks Next-Gen Consoles Aren't Powerful Enough

Epic Games has reportedly been shown the specifications of the next Xbox and Playstation consoles, and don't believe they are powerful enough.

Quote:
The Unreal Engine, which has been built within Epic Games, is the single most used video game engine in today's releases. Currently being built upon in the labs at Epic Games is the next iteration of the Unreal Engine, which will be the Unreal Engine 4. In the presence of this technology, Epic Games has a designated idea of what the next generation of consoles need to be able to provide in order to deliver the type of performance that they are building their engine for.

With this being said, Epic Games has recently caught a glimpse of what the specs for next-gen consoles, PS4 and Xbox 720, will look like. In response, they have stated that they are not going to be enough to provide the type of performance that they are building their next engine for, and are pushing Sony and Microsoft to put more performance into their next systems.

"Our new engine is a dog. It can sit up, bark and wag it's tail, but only if you have $2500.00 worth of gaming hardware to throw it as a bone. The $750 worth of 2-year-old hardware in the 720 & PS4 might be 10x as powerful as the 360 & PS3, but it can't run our engine and if it can't run our engine we don't get to sell it to people.

Please change hardware you are already manufacturing so we can keep making money hats.

Or, the next gen consoles will be overpriced pieces of garbage. I'm going with that one.

Could this mean Epic will come crawling back to the PC users begging for forgiveness?! Naaaaaaah! The smell of money is way too enticing

Sheeit, better clean yo code up and optimize. Im done with expensive consoles running hot and breaking down all thee tyme for a while. Grafx are good enough until i see something running that makes me think otherwise. Make the engine PC only if you want to push things, might as well, PC is coming back anyway.

More performance is a bit vague, what does he want more Ram or GPU?

I hope they're not going to skimp on on-board memory. I still can't understand why the XBOX 360 only has 512MB.

These kind of reports make me roll my eyes.
On one hand, we are told that the next gen systems will have the processing power of two suns, and 5 minutes later we are told they are as weak as a day old kitten.

Show us the system running a game, and then we shall judge if the leap is great enough to justify the expense.

Last generation's leap seemed small at the time.

Epic is just trying to sell their product. It makes sense that they are over hyping it, its their job as the company for that product. I am sure it can be run on next gen, they just dont want to admit it because it demerits their product.

Give us something that is on par with todays high-end PC, bring the prod cost down and give us a cheaper console generation than the last one. Price > "power".

First the Xbox 360 has 522MB of RAM (10MB on the GPU).

Second -- it was released in 2005. Which means it was probably done being designed in late 2004. If rumors are correct they only wanted 256MB of RAM (to save money, shocker RAM isn't free), but Epic showed them Unreal Engine with 256MB of RAM vs 512MB of RAM and MS spent the extra money to upgrade the RAM to 512MB.

In 2005 512MB was a good amount of RAM. The Xbox had 64MB of RAM and was released in 2001. So in 4 years you have increased the RAM 8x. Pretty damn good.

Please stop and think before you make comments like that again.

The Xbox 360 is now 7 years old. Go back 7 years -- 512MB was pretty impressive for a home console.

Microsoft did not go cheap on the RAM.

Then maybe Epic should build their own console if they think its easy to build a console that is cost efficient and still can sell for a profit. Its incredibly hard to do that.

The days of selling consoles for 500-600 dollars are over. More than 400 will be very hard to sell.

Because 512MB was a decent amount back in 2004 when it was designed.

Interesting. I think a $499 to $599 launch price will be close, especially with the kinnect built in for Xbox. The hard core fan will pay this.

However the real competition here is a tablet. A family only has so many entertainment dollars and gaming is clearly a target for the new generation of tablets.

Parents love them as they are totally portable as well.

Tablets also do a lot more than a console and of course the games are much cheaper, at least for now.

The next generation might have much slower adoption rates than the current one, much like the DVD to Blu Ray transition.

We don't have exact specs yet so we don 't really know if Epic is right or not. All we have is rumors. Maybe Epic is right maybe they are just trying to build hype for there new engine.

Yeah if it were not shared with video. 512 to a 1GB now days is plenty but if you really want the games to shine you also need another 512 to 1GB for video. personnaly i believe if they gave the system a 1GB of memory and split it for system/video then game designers would have plenty to work with. Really it just takes good game design and engineering with the resources you got to make game look badass. Honestly I just want to the new systems to be able to push true 1080p resolutions.

I am pretty sure he was making fun of the old Bill Gates quote about memory needs.

I think everyone understands the more and faster the RAM, the better.
