Blizzard has announced that Diablo III will be getting a free trial called the Starter Edition.
Quote:
Diablo III Starter Edition provides players the ability to try out a limited version of Diablo III. Guest Pass keys allow a player to give friends the opportunity to play the Starter Edition of Diablo III. Guest Pass keys are included in all box copies of Diablo III.
Players on Starter Edition game licenses have the following restrictions:
Act I up to the Skeleton King is available
Level 13 cap
Matchmaking available only with other Starter Edition players
No Real Money Auction House access
How do I get the Diablo III Starter Edition?
Log into your Battle.net Account Management page and navigate to the Download Game Clients section. The Diablo III Starter Edition will be available for download there.
Players without a Battle.net account can create one, and then download the Starter Edition.
Note: The Diablo III Starter Edition will not be available without a Guest Pass until 30 days after the game launches.
Huh... so basically the beta is free, at least with client fixes =D
Smart move, too many games have NO way to try them, to see if you like it, or if even runs on your computer/craptop/etc. Which only leaves piracy.
And don't be fooled, this game will be pirated, if they can emulate WoW servers for the private servers, they can do it for D3. Or it could be simple like Starcraft 2 and you just needed to log into battlenet, spoof that and then play the campaign.
I like to see moves like this. One reason I like how you can demo games on Xbox Arcade and such, so you can actually try the game out for a bit before making some purchasing not knowing what you're going to get.

Its not that simple. Everything is controlled serverside. Without the server there are no enemies and no npcs.
Star Wars should have done this. All MMOs should do this.
Yep, or even better if studios were smart is give away stripped down mobile versions of their flagship games as the free trials. Perfect for casual players who would be too timid to dive into expensive retail titles.

This is a pretty good move on their part. At this point I had pretty much given up on ever playing D3, but at least now I can try it and see how I enjoy it.
And I agree that all MMO/commitment-requiring games should have this.
Cool. I am a PC game novice and have no idea if Diablo would run on my machine or not. There is no way I would buy this without having a demo to see if it will work for me.
One reason I hoped on the beta (beyond wanting to try Diablo 3). Was able to see how well my system was able to handle it. I'm expecting it to run even smoother with the retail version.
One more hour until installer goes live. This wait is killing me.
So if my friend gives me a key, I can't play with him? That's pretty weak.
Yes. This is utter shit
I had multiple friends to play with tonight but being the only one who's retail copy did not arrive in time i went for the starter edition stuff only to be thoroughly disappointed
Tonight was:
1) Servers down
2) Authentication not working (315300)
3) Starter Edition fail
Don't discount D3 because of a few starting day glitches. Even Witcher 2 had them. This will be resolved shortly and will be shown to be the RPG of the year, if not the decade. Buy it now!
Disclosure: Every sale of D3 probably makes me richer by a few micropennies.
