Funcom has announced that a beta weekend for The Secret World will take place from May 11th-13th.

The Secret World is getting closer and closer to launch, and this Friday we’re kicking off the very first Beta Weekend!
Starting Friday May 11th at 9am PDT and running until Sunday May 13th at 11:59pm PDT, you will be able to jump into The Secret World and play the game yourself. The best way to ensure that you get to play this weekend is to pre-order the game, which grants access to this first one as well as all upcoming Beta Weekends.
When I first saw this game at PAX, I was really intrigued. Then they said it was an MMO and I walked away.
I still think they need a separate MMO version of PAX Prime. Then the tickets never would have sold out in a week, because the MMO showcase/League of Legends tournament would have been its own show.
There really, really is less crossover between MMO and non-MMO players than a lot of people think.
Assume you mean TSW? I can tell you from experience - the recent Penny Arcade comic about how Guild Wars, Tera, and Star Wars all bring something new and interesting to the MMO genre but fail in other respects? (GW 'dynamic questing' but boring story & combat, Tera exciting action combat but boring story and quest-death-march, SW great character story but boring combat and questing) TSW fits right into that with a rich setting. If it was an HBO TV series, I'd love it as much as Game of Thrones.
If it was an HBO TV series, I'd love it as much as Game of Thrones.
That's a good way to generalize the secret world. If it were a TV series I'd say it's on par with battlestar galactica. Hot characters, mature settings, the real world / slightly alternate reality, topical issues mixed in with your daily grinding, flexible characters, genuine 3 faction pvp so population balance is less of an issue.
Should it last more than 2 good seasons like BSG did? The lifetimer's are crossing their fingers.

I am intrigued, in spite of my deep dislike of Funcom. Not intrigued enough to pre-order though. I'll wait for the round-ups from Massively or MMO-Champion before I think too much on it.
A fair comparison, I'd say. Opening scenes I was iffy - graphics were meh, the writing was hit-or-miss, voice-acting was all over the place. But come the tutorial prophecy, I started enjoying myself. The end of the tutorial though? Totally blew me away.
I've been enjoying beta'ing, but there are some definite glaring flaws I have to look past. Graphics, glitch-a-plenty, combat. But the lovecraftian-modern setting is just so juicy.

My word is not good enough for you? For SHAME!!

If I hadn't watched the 30 minute GDC demo I might be more inclined to agree, but once you get down to it a lot of the gameplay seems same-ol' despite the shiney coat of paint.
