Game of Thrones Interview

Xbox360Achievements has an interview with Sylvan Sechi, the lead designer of the upcoming Game of Thrones RPG.

Quote:
In terms of the RPG genre then, what other games have you drawn from as influences?

SS: It's often cited by the press, but not Dragon Age. That's not the reason we started working on the game. From a story point of view, a big reference is definitely Planescape: Torment, and from a gameplay perspective it's more The Knights of the Old Republic or Baldur's Gate. Also, during development Heavy Rain was released and we're huge fans of that game, although we actually think that an RPG by definition is flowing. But we liked Heavy Rain for its mature content and its compelling story. It was too late in development to have an impact on the game, but it's the kind of thing we like and storytelling is at the core of Game of Thrones.

It's kinda hard to get excited about a game that exists to suck blood off an existing property. Pretty sure all the Harry Potter games were trash.

After my sister talked my brother into getting that NES Little Mermaid game back in the day, I've been bitter...

Ugh, anyone who like Heavy Rain is my gaming enemy. There might have been a good game somewhere under the shit, but the horrible fucking QTEs made it completely unplayable unless your hands knew the playstation controller instinctively.

I have this on pre-order, but I just hope they don't get beyond book two, or tshi will have to stay on my shelf unplayed just like Witcher 2.

Console ports of popular Movie/TV titles have been a staple of video games for ages.

Lol, Planescape Torment as a story influence...whatever.

Have Cyanide ever made a half decent game? Is there any reason why anyone would be interested in this?

Lots of Dragon Age hate. WTF?
I like that this game is a complete cash-in on the popularity of a book series, and now a TV show. Would we even be talking about it, if it wasn't? Probably not.
Dragon Age was an original IP. The second game had some good ideas but needed another year to gestate and be finished (like maybe make a couple more dungeons?!).

Boy, that snippet sure said the right things, almost too much so as if pandering. I agree with the skepticism here.

Amen brother.

Did you see that recent interview with David Cage where he said "gameplay doesn't interest me"?

He's totally against traditional game mechanics, because it's inherently repetitive.

The thing is, you don't need to be a visionary to see what his version of interactivity could lead to; I think evryone's seen Dragon's Lair by now.

I don't see this being good, not because anything the Devs have said, but simply because even though the world seems tailor made for an RPG, the actual content of the books is an epic drama where the reader has nearly omnipresent view of how things unfold. You put the reader/player in the point of view of just one or two characters and you've already failed to understand the books.

I think the Dragon Age comment was less of an "EA diss" and more of a "uhm, we don't want people comparing us to Dragon Age, because it's nothing like that, even though you all keep saying that". Covering their ass, if you will.

As for "why they made the game"? Someone else already said it. Cash grab. There's NO WAY anyone would have thought about making this a game before the TV show was a success. Not just made, but a success.

The Lion King and Aladdin FOR THE GENESIS were great platformers. There used to be a time when Disney games were well made and awesome.

Fucking wildabeast level can eat my ass even 20 years later.
Rose-colored glasses, my friend. The difference between "mildly tolerable" and "good" is a wider margin than many of care to recall with clarity.
I just played both of those games again recently, and they are NOT what I remember them to be. Oh, and Jurassic Park was my favorite platformer back then. It is Christ awful

...I beat TLK when I was 8. I mean seriously? They might be difficult to some but they were great games.
